Gunks Conditions

Word is things are melting VERY quickly. Climbers yesterday reported little problems with snow at the bottom or on the climbs. Pictures I saw indicate the walls are now completely dry in places as well. Looks like the Gunks climbing season is officially open (with zero long term cold and no snow in near or long term forecasts).

I climbed yesterday it was great. But, seepage is so very real right now in some places its crazy. The updraft gully of CCK was a fucking waterfall and there are literal rivers and ponds in a lot of places. I've never seen the crack next to Kens crack have so so so much water. Literal actual river going down there and yes I know its wet there but it was realllyy flowing. A couple of the rap routes are absolutely drenched with puddles at the bottom that are great for getting your rope soaked.

Nevertheless, It was an amazing day of climbing and I would be there today in a fucking second if I didn't have a bunch of work to do!

Is most of the snow down there gone at this point?

Alicia Sokolowski · · Brooklyn, NY · Joined Aug 2010 · Points: 1,771

Yes, it's gone. There is residual wetness in places and Ken's Crack has a little waterfall running over it, but tons of routes are fine.

Bump. Can anyone give an update on how much snow came down today / wetness of boulders?

Yesterday was terrific.

Temp is dropping quickly... below freezing now, so that snow isn't going away anytime soon.

But are the boulders wet? / a lot of snow on the top outs? (thinking about carriage road...)

We were there just now and everything was fine. Rock was dry. Cold. May be a little snow on top out but not too bad.

What about this sunday?? how's it lookin for the boulders?

Tylerpratt · · Litchfield, Connecticut · Joined Feb 2016 · Points: 40

Besides the three feet of snow on them with the rain/sleet/snow that might be coming on Saturday you mean?

My spring break is from saturday- next sunday. Think I'll be able to get any climbing in or will it be too cold/wet?

Tylerpratt · · Litchfield, Connecticut · Joined Feb 2016 · Points: 40

I think Tuesday will be near if not 50 degrees? I think you can get some climbing in. You should be able to find dry routes. I would bring snow shoes and a tarp and a rope bag though...

If you are bouldering I would say its def not too cold...wet on the other hand... depends on the day...

What about something like Martinez roof / cataclysms edge? Should be dry right ?

Plenty of people out in the Sun today, but due to the slushy wet snow it's best to bring boots and a tarp. Routes and most boulders are dry.

What's the carriage road looking like recently?
