Is is possible to alert a user when someone makes a comment about their photo? There have been questions posed on photos that go unanswered, such as
mountainproject.com/v/john_…

I've had comments or questions on some of my photos that were not noticed until months after and was wondering if it's possible to send posters a notification link (optional, of course, cause Blitzo's inbox would be maxed) to let them know if another climber made a comment or question on their pic.

Thanks to all you Admins and let's hope for a Colorado weekend without a blizzard soon!

i think in situations like the one you highlighted, the one posting the comment should probably alert the photo owner via PM, after posing their question.

this will alert the photo-poster that there is a direct question, as well as an opportunity for the general users to see the question and the reply.

...IDK if I'd want to know every time someone commented on a pic of mine, but if anyone ever has a direct question I'm usually more than happy to answer it if at all possible.

perhaps a little check box on the comment form to "notify photo owner of comment" would work, though I suppose if someone's serious about getting an answer they'll email the owner. That's already happened to me a few times, and it's nice to know that people are curious or interested in the content posted.

There has been talk of adding this. There would be a place you could go on the site and see all comments to your contributions. Optionally this could be periodically emailed to you.

i like that idea... maybe on the individual's user page, such that other users can browse what people have to say about your stuff too?

Kind of like the comments section we already see there..

Just wanted to chime in that I would love to see this feature as well.

Two other suggestions:

1.) Previous/Next style navigation buttons to navigate, especially in the personal photo albums.

2.) A "route" field for photos in personal albums. For example, here are a couple of galleries of photos from The Umph Slot:

mountainproject.com/v/james…
mountainproject.com/v/james…

but they are in no way linked to the route description:

mountainproject.com/v/color…

In order to do that I would have to resubmit them to the gallery on the route page and that seems a little redundant, even for a climber.

If you are the route owner, you can attach a photo by selecting "Edit Route -> Add to this Route -> Photo (Copy)". I think this would be a great feature to add for every user, you shouldn't have to be the route owner to add an existing photo to a route. I've had to ask some route owners to attach a photo of mine to their routes to avoid re-uploading the image again. The dialog could be put in the "Add Photo" section, with a choice to either upload a file and add a description or choose an existing photo ID.

Also a section in your personal page that displays all photos that were submitted with your name attached to them would be good. You can add a person's name to a photo but there is no way to search for all photos with X person attached.

Finally, a section where comments to your photos could be viewed would be great, RSS feed on that, please!!

I belong to another online community that has a great system for this. Any time you comment on a discussion thread or a photo, and someone responds to it, then a link to the thread or photo discussion shows up in a sidebar on the website (as long as you're logged in). You can also subscribe or unsubscribe to any of those discussions by clicking a button in the discussion thread at any time. SUPER convenient, doesn't require going to your email account or clutter up your inbox. I think it would be a great addition to mp, though I don't know what kind of code-writing it would require.

I second the suggestion to do this without emails.

I'd love to see a notification system that told you when somebody comments on something you submitted, but it also could be useful when a comment is made shortly after you comment on something. For example, if I post a comment on a route, the system would notify me if somebody else comments there within 30 days.

I agree that one of my main issues is figuring out what is going on with the photos/areas/comments that I add to the site. If someone posts a question on a photo or area it is really hard for the original author to ever know that this comment has occurred.

Facebook may be a good reference for the notification system as I find it very useful and not annoying at all. It is very comprehensive and gives you a sense of what is happening with your items without you having to go and dig through all of it.

The way I envision it is that in your profile page there is a "Notifications" tab that only you can see (or maybe everyone can see it).

Overall there would be several categories covering Photos, Areas, Comments, Forums.

Notifications would occur when:
- Someone comments on something I have created in the site. A photo I uploaded, a area I created, a forum thread I have created.

- Activity happens in an area I commented on. For example if I post in a forum topic and someone else posts. Or I comment on an area and someone else comments, same with pictures.

By keeping it in its own section each user would refer to these notifications as they want and can clear all notifications, when they are done looking through them. This would be the least invasive way while making it significantly easier to see what is going on.

Great suggestions everyone, keep them coming. I was looking for a winter project to tackle on MP, and this might be the perfect one.

It would also be helpful to be able to keep a sort of "Watch List" for specific users so that I can see when a friend of mine posts something on the site. I wouldn't want this to turn into a MySpace-esque "OMG look at my Top 8 Friends!" sort of thing, but a private list that only I can see would be handy.

There are some exceptional photographers on here and I'd love to be able to easily see when they post new images.

thanks!

Notifications would be a huge step forward as far as improving the site goes. I think that a notifications tab in your profile page is a great alternative to having the notifications appear on an always-present sidebar when you are viewing the site. Regardless of the visual format, notifications should occur when someone responds to one of your contributions to the site, as well as when someone responds to a contribution to which you've already chimed in. So if I submit a picture to the site, be it on a route page or a personal photo album or wherever, when someone comments on it, I would see a notification. Also, whenever I comment on any thread or photo or route page, and someone replies, I would see a notification to that, as well. The notifications tab could literally just be list of links to these threads/submissions.

In my mind, the subscriptions idea has a lot of merit. I can choose to subscribe to a particular forum thread, or a picture, or a route/area page, by clicking a button. That way, whenever someone has something new to post on one of my subscriptions, I can easily see that it happened without having to go to those threads/pages to check up on a regular basis. If I decided to develop or help develop a crag, and someone posts about an access issue or chopping a bolt or whatever, then I get a notification next time I sign in to the website. If I find a photo on here that I love, I can subscribe to it and easily see whenever someone asks a question or more info is posted about it. Your own creations (photos, threads, route pages) and creations you comment on should get an automatic subscription, but you could choose to subscribe to something by pushing a subscribe button. That way, you wouldn't have to make a comment just for the sake of being kept in the loop.

If you go the subscription route, a key feature would be the ability to unsubscribe. Say I post in a thread about a subject that turns into a flame war or extreme political discussion, and I'm tired of seeing notifications about it. I could click an unsubscribe button on the thread, and I would no longer see notifications about it.

bump

Too nice outside right now but maybe this could be a rainy day project for one of the admins?

mountainproject.com/v/color…

Optional Facebook type notifications (email) when someone comments on your photo would be a great and helpful feature. Please avoid any and all other Facebook type modifications of the use of this awesome site.

I would LOVE to have a notification that I have new photo comments.
