Went up to lumpy today, ran a quick lap up the book and decided to do another. Wanted to do stretch marks up to pear buttress and so on. Sooo I bouldered up to place the one not so great small rp that protects the crux entry moves on stretch marks and decided to down climb to test it from the ground. A couple tugs and it set even better (I thought), so I gave it one more tug and "POP" thing smacks me right in the teeth! Now I had been on the route before and remembered that piece not being great, so I really wanted to make sure and sure enough, it wasn't great. Better my teeth than my bones though.

Nice, dude!!! That is one gnarly remnant hanging there. Think of it this way, just paint your face orange, put a candle in your mouth and you'll be all ready for trick or treaters next week. (sorry, couldn't resist.) Hopefully you heal up quick!

I was thinking of putting on a flannel and a camo hat, then calling it good.

Nice man! I think you got me beat, I didn't split mine to the roots. That musta hurt like a bitch. Nothing a little modern dentistry can't fix. Good on ya.

Busted my front tooth off trying to pull a fixed pin that had a long sling. Got the pin and lost half my tooth. It was a cool Sept. day and when I inhaled I really not happy.

Rope in the mouth + fall= no front teeth. Friend of mine many years ago at JT. I wish I had that photo of her yet as being Greek with a fantastic tan, she looked like some poor southwestern Indian begging alongside the road with a goofy smile.

Lesson we can learn: One should avoid nuts in or near the mouth.

I have never busted a tooth setting a nut. I have had my tool pop off and smack me in the tooth though(adze off for that reason). It was days after having dental work too. It only takes once... you won't do it again.
Monty, dude you should get some dental insurance if you don't already. I had to have a root canal cause I did the same thing to a molar and left it alone. The pulp in my tooth got fu*&ed. It was $800.00 bucks w/o insurance $170 with. It's called Delta Dental i think.

Actually after I coiled my rope and walked back to the base of pear buttress where our packs were, I wanted to run another lap up the book since the weather was sooo nice... but my girlfriend was pretty opposed to that as I was constantly spitting out blood and shards of my own teeth. Pfffft what does she know.

I just chipped a tooth on a hard boulder problem grinding my teeth... lame.

I was working at a gym and one of my friends decided to lead a roof route in the gym. So he was on the roof going for the next clip. He grabbed some slack and bit the rope to grab a bit more. Then he fell with the rope in his mouth shearing off his front two teeth.

DONT BITE THE ROPE!

Hey Dave,

Wow, bummer! I wonder if Kirsten will want to take you out to Woody's for pizza anymore? I did the same with a ski tip during a fall when I was a young lad. It broke the right incisor in half, just like yours. I had a root canal and a cap done but you might want to look at the implant scenario with today's advanced dentistry. Make sure you find a good one. Hope you guys are doing well.

This one time.... I was a little gripped and chipped a tooth biting down on a biner I was holding in my mouth. It was only a little one though, so I dulled it down with a diamond file and called it good.

Those sharp incisors should be popular these days with the 'vampire' crowd and all.....they pay good money to have it done to their teeth.

+1 like having the rope behind your leg... just not a good idea.

I remember reading a story about Steve schniter on the first one day ascent of the salathe wall he fell up near the head wall and knocked out both of his front teeth. And when he got the the belay his partner told him "you can keep leading" or something like that. They did break the record I think, minus two teeth.

No, but I knocked someone else's teeth out when they tried to chop one of my routes.

Grey Ringsby knocked his out on an early FA lead attempt of Thunderbolts From Hell .
But it wasn't from a stopper it was from whacking the wall. Story courtesy of the late Steve Diekhoff.

The woman who used to cut my hair had a female client who lost most of her front teeth when she took a 'bite' of rope to clip and fell. Ohhh... that visual is briefly refreshed each time I bite!

lost my right front tooth to a similar mechanism a few years ago - welding electrode clamp (stinger) was left on a ladder. I went to move the ladder, looked up to see if the top would clear the joists and POW! shattered my tooth. Rockin a porcelain replacement that is glued on. Havent had any issues with it. While I dont bite into apples any longer, eating a sandwich is no problem.

I'm rocking a titaniam screw in my gums right now with a false tooth glued on, that continues to fall out. I guesse that rp shattered the root of my tooth, so they couldnt just glue a new tooth on to my old root. They extracted that whole root and put a titaniam screw in there. In 2 months(after healing) they can screw on a "good" fake tooth that should be just as strong, if not stronger than my other teeth.

In the end I'll look something like this.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
