Description Suggest change

Welcome to the crown jewel of waterfalls in the Keweenaw! At 110 ft, Houghton-Douglass Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Michigan. In the winter months, this is a wonderful flow to climb with a wide area to choose lines from. Be cautious of the main central flow though as the water is often rushing fast and the ice can be a little thin in spots. She starts tame, but gets steeper the higher you make it up.

***** Access Issue - The UPCC is currently in discussions with MDNR who now owns and manages this site.  Climbing is currently still allowed and will likely continue to be open to climbing, but the completed management plan is not finished.    In this transition period, it is imperative that climbers follow all posted signs and show that we are good stewards of this climbing area.  Once infrastructure to the area are complete (which will be extensive)  there will be specific protocols for those that wish to ice climb at this location.  This page will be updated when more information is available.

Location Suggest change

1.5 miles from Lake Linden on M-26 going North. Follow the trail into the woods once you see the sign with the name of the falls. When you get to the gorge, follow the trail climbers left to gain access to the bottom of the falls.

Protection Suggest change

Ice screws. Good boulder at the top for TR or use a tree.
