Description
One of Acadia’s truest slab climbs. This is the lone bolted route at the Arms Race Wall. Start up a steep flake and layback to the first bolt. Step right to a nice ledge to clip the second and contemplate the sea of slab above you. A tricky sequence culminates with pop to a thank god hold out left. Mantle up to a nice ledge and step right into the final slab crux. You might think you were in Clifton instead of Acadia as you smear up the ever thinning face and claw for the good ledge you’ve been waiting for. Romp up easy terrain to the anchor.
A note on the name and grade:
I met John out at the cliff and asked him about this route. He said he named it Backside Driver’s License, after a phrase all the drinkers in Tremont say. He graded it 10a. My buddy and I climbed it and both thought it was 10+, since it was harder than Sidestreet, a 10c at South Wall. I averaged it to 10b for the sake of consensus. Another Island mystery solved!
Location
From the main area where all the sport climbs are, hike up to the right until you reach a large face with multiple splitter cracks and a boulder beneath it, this is the Hombre De Acro area. Continue up and right through the boulders, tunneling under a small boulder cave to a vegetated ledge, this is the Arms Race Wall. The lone sport climb on the slab is Backside Drivers License.
