-2024 Golden Eagle Avoidance Areas: The Early Bird Crag, The Frontera, The Undertaker Wall, The Sushi Bar, The Great Chasm
Each spring Golden Eagles return to Maple Canyon for nesting. Eagles, falcons, hawks, and other migratory birds use shallow depressions on ledges, cliffs and rock walls to build nests, often returning to the same site year after year to raise their young. The United States Forest Service (USFS) requests that visitors and recreationists avoid these areas during critical nesting periods which typically start in early March and last through late August. Avoiding recreational activity in the vicinity of the nest sites along and maintaining a safe viewing distance will help ensure survival of young birds.
Golden Eagles are protected by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service under authority of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. A conviction of nest disturbance can carry a fine to $5,000 & one year imprisonment.
Description
Long and varied with 5 or 6 mini-cruxes. Tons of fun from top to bottom! Be sure to bring plenty of draws (21) and every inch of a 70m rope to get down. Mildly overhanging the entire way with thoughtful face climbing, but not a burly cave route which makes it a nice change of pace for Box Canyon. Try to say "Cobble Gobble" 10 times in a row and you will be smiling as much as you will when you clip the chains :)
Gets mid-day sun for a couple hours approximately 1-3pm depending on the time of year.
Like all new (and old) climbs in Maple, take care with holds popping as we break this route in. It was thoroughly cleaned +/- 2 feet either side of the bolts so its best to stay on the bolt line. There are plentiful big rest holds right on the line without traversing). Be careful of your belayer down there who most definitely is wearing a helmet, right? If you stick clip the 2nd or 3rd bolt (and skip the 1st) it gives the belayer more mobility.
Enjoy!
