Jay's Memorial Route, Rise Up

5.11-, Sport, 70 ft (21 m),  Avg: 3.4 from 18 votes
FA: Cam Brown and Bryan Smith with help from Matt Forgaty, May 21st 2021
Oregon > Portland & The… > Rocky Butte > l. Wall of Shadows

Description

A well protected route with distinct and memorable movement. The route shares the start with Tete Gulley and moves left over the steep arete after the shared 3rd bolt, and before the crack crux of Tete Gulley.

The route is a memorial tribute in honer of Jason Walston. Jay was a kind individual, generous friend to many, a beautiful human, father and my best friend since elementary school. Jay lived in Bend, Oregon and passed away on March 5th, 2021 at the age of 44. Jay touched the lives of many during his 44 years on earth, and his spirit will always be missed. It is my wish that Jay's passion for the mountains and the people he loved live on through those who climb the memorial route.

Location

Left of center on the Wall of Shadows, starting just right of Chaitanya.  It is best accessed from Skidmore & 90th, a 2 minute approach from the street, parking on the shoulder. Alternatively, you can walk down and around the corner from Breakfast Crack.

This is a ground-up route, there is no top-rope access.

Protection

11 quick draws for the climb and an anchor if setting up a top rope. The Anchor is equipped with steel carabiners for lowering.

[Hide Comment] Ahh haa, so good brother. Best to you and thanks for putting it out there to make the world a better place. Congrats on the lead and the beautiful line, If my shoulder cooperates I too shall get on this one. But if not, it will be there forever for those that follow. Looks like a great line. Sorry for Jays early passing, but glad that someone cared enough to mark his passing, we will all be there all to soon. Sadly. Thank you for all of it. May we meet some day, and bless you for remembering your friend - and also for putting up what appears to be a great line. xoxo May 23, 2021

[Hide Comment] Sent this route yesterday when climbing with the FA himself! Really fun movement on great rock with a distinct crux making for a difficult onsight. There are slight variations on the upper face to make the route harder, or not. But once the moves are dialed in, this is a great climb that more folks should attempt. Jul 14, 2021

[Hide Comment] As an interesting historical note, the steep face portion of this line was toproped in the 80s appears to be "Swiss Miss", however, the original 1989 guidebook shows that it utilized the start on "Tete Gulley" until the upper ledge and then finishes around where the current anchors are. Thus the original rating of 10b, which I feel is accurate if you skip the crux boulder problem in the middle. This wonderful, new lead climb doesn't shy away from the committing crux which the original climbers shunned. Jul 13, 2022

[Hide Comment] This route climbs way better than it looks which I guess is how you could describe all of RB. There are a bunch of wild mailbox slots on the upper wall. If you are coming for the harder sport routes this makes a decent warm up without the need to bring a rack. Oct 3, 2024
