Description Suggest change

This off trail route up Ammonoosuc Ravine is popular due to ease of approach and potential for ski opportunities. As you walk the flat section of Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail along the river. Look for a tributary brook to your right. This is not obvious unless there's tracks. If you are not approaching on skins, please be respectful and walk alongside the skin track. Ascend through conifer glades into the bottom of the slide. From here follow the easy snow gully to the uphill until it terminates. Assuming there's been usual winds (ie NW). This will likely be scoured and perfect cramponing conditions. The gully terminates below the summit cone of Mount Monroe, which is a boulder field, so it's best to head left towards the Washington-Monroe Col. From here, you should see the Lake Of The Clouds Hut (closed in winter). You can proceed to the summit of Washington or Monroe depending on your objectives for the day. Descent is best done via Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail. It also makes a lovely ski. Some cool opportunities for backcountry ice exist on a right variation of the slide.
