Trail junction at middle earth. When coming up from the southern trailhead, you'll see this just after passing Shadowfax. Follow it to the left to continue on the main trail to the next area, or go up right to climbs listed on MP as left of SF.

Last switchback before Shadowfax. Revolve the rock formations counter-clockwise and upwards to go to the backside, where "Lower" Middle Earth (listed on MP as to the right of Shadowfax) are located. The closed area is the valley below, AFAIK.
