At the height of summer along the Narrow Gauge Trail-- is that a hops vine growing on a black chokeberry (Aronia) bush?

Some of the many drilled rock steps on the descent. It seems like a pretty big impact for a slight improvement in security? Many are carved too deep and fill with water/ice. Seems like Via rungs may have been a better option? Other thoughts?
