I just moved from Arizona to Montclair and am looking for climbers to get out with.  20 years' experience, safe, not weird :).  Enjoy trad and sport outside, roped or bouldering indoors. I will be going to the New Jersey Rock Gym tomorrow (2/27) after work if anyone wants to meet up.

Can tell that you're not from the area by using Newark as a landmark ;)

Hey, welcome to the garden. We don't have too too much to offer in terms of climbing, but I work at an independently owned gym called High Exposure in Northvale. It's a great change of pace compared to corporate gyms for me.

The powerlinez just over the new york border has really cleaned up in the past few years, and while not necessarily a destination there is plenty of quality rock to come check out. I've only been alive for a little longer than you've been climbing, so I still have plenty to learn, but regardless it's great to connect with climbers in the area

Thanks Foster, I'll have to check out the Powerlinez.

So Newark is not a good point of reference huh?  I live near the Hudson River.  Does that help?  :)

bro, dont ever mention newark, or camden or trenton....they are like the car jacking capitols of the united states. seriously. i think one of those 3 was actually slated as such not long ago....ive had to hide, and have seen empty cars still idling with bullet holes and broken windows still rolling down the road empty in newark.....i had to work there for about a year and a half on the shift that ended at midnight.....walking 2 blocks to my car at that time was always butt clenching...while some areas of newark have been cleaned up, its still not a place you really want to be. the only time i use newark as a landmark is when someone from not around here cant figure out 5 other places i give them as reference to figure out the area in nj......then ill ask if they know where newark airport is, and go from there....

just say montclair......some people even think of the montclair/essex fells area as a bit "uppity".  youre definitely on the better end there to find a partner than saying newark

Hey Eric, I’ve heard that NJRG has the best community but nearby you’ve also got Gravity Vault in Chatham, and a gym opening up in Newark this spring called Method.  There’s a guidebook with NJ crags and boulders you can get online but it’s only an hour and a half to the gunks(though it can be quite busy on weekends). Not very much sport climbing without a decent drive though. I’ve only been following trad for a few seasons and just recently started leading but I’m in NJ for next few months if you are looking for partners in gym or outside.

Thanks everyone.  Hopefully I'll meet some of you in person and I have definitely learned about Newark through this thread!

Just a heads up, I used to live in Fort Lee and Climb at the Powerlinez alot, watch out for Ticks, or bring some spray they are everywhere!

Hahaha.  First time seeing Newark referenced on MP.  Montclair may be geographically close to Newark but in many other ways its quite far away.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
