Adirondack Guidebook
|
Hello, I am planning a trip to the Adirondacks(I’m staying in lake placid) and am unable to find access to the second edition of Adirondack Rock by Jim Lawyer and Jeremy Haas. It’s unavailable on their website. I understand that this is the main guidebook for the Adirondacks. Where might be a place to find this book? Could I get away without it? |

Mountain Project, from my experience, has done a good job remaining up-to-date. I’d refer to that, and if you still have questions, stop on into The Mountaineer—great folks there! |

You might try calling Eastern Mountain Sports ( if it still exists--they closed most of their stores) in Lake Placid or Keene Mountaineer in Keene Valley, to see if either has a copy in stock ( unlikely but possible). It doesn't appear that Rock and Snow in the Gunks has any available--and they carry a big stock of guidebooks. You don't say where you are located or when you will be heading there, but if you have at least a couple of weeks of 'lead time', it will be worth the effort to do a widespread on-line climbing store search to see if anyplace has some in stock. Don't limit your search to places in the Northeast, look instead for places known to carry good guidebook selections, and don't forget to check stores in Canada as well, even Europe ( ClimbEurope carries a big selection of international books). As for getting by without a book. While, of course it is possible, it is a very large and complex area, with often ( though not always--Pitchoff, for instance, is roadside and close to Lake Placid) difficult approaches--and route-finding on the cliffs can also be challenging!!! I have never used the route-finder function on here for the Adirondacks---and have not been impressed by it's accuracy elsewhere, but it is likely better than nothing. However, I believe that Lawyer and Haas have a few on-line mini-guides to select Adirondack crags available, I think, on the Gunks App, ( or possibly another on-line guidebook site) so you should check that option as well. One other thing, if you plan on being there any time from early/mid May through, at least, mid-July bring long sleeve shirts, long pants, head nets and plenty of repellant !!!! |

If you're planning on hitting classic routes in well traveled areas, the first edition 1 volume) of their guide will be perfectly adequate for you. Look for used copies online. |
|
When I was there last fall, you could go to the mountaineer and just ask to take pics of the guidebook they have at the store. |

Jonah S is right, the mountaineer folks are chill, and should have a copy of the book if you cant find one before your trip. |
|
I think Rocksport (climbing gym) in Queensbury has a few sets for sale, if you’ll be driving by on your way to Lake Placid. Might be worth calling to see if they still have them! |

Any word on if they are working on a new edition? |

Hi Michael, Jim and I have been doing field work for the 3rd Edition of Adirondack Rock, mapping out new cliffs and revisiting the existing ones. Wish us luck! Jeremy |

Jeremy Haas wrote: Awesome! Both of your editions have been gold standard! |
