Anyone seen that 4mm tag line from edelrid in the wild ? What did you think of it ? Good handling ? How stiff ?

Can find anywhere near me that would have it in stock to touch it before i order one...

I use Lawson ironwire for guyline, which has a similar construction (kernmantle, UHMWPE core, UHMWPE/Polyester blend sheathe) and has very good handling characteristics— tangle resistant, holds knots well but easy to undo, minimal water absorption/icing.

Doesn’t look like it’s actually out yet, but I expect HN2 will have it available by the foot— 4mm is about the right size for replacement cordtek for Petzl leopards/hybrids.

If you are coming to Smith Rock you can stop at their N America warehouse and see if they have one available. If they have them commercially available anywhere this side of the pond you can probably buy direct from the warehouse while you're there.

You could order it from REI, and as a member get 20% off a single full priced item until Mar 24:

Where are you located? Rock and Resole has one in stock in Boulder…

4mm seems like a nightmare for rope handling characteristics

I have never used taglines, opting for double ropes instead. Out of curiosity, what’s it like pulling on a 4mm tagline after, say, a 60m rappel? Not trying to criticize, I’d really like to know what kinds of experiences people have had.

I have a 6 mil and often use my tiblock and a caribiner to pull the rope if there is any rope drag.

Slap that microtrax with a nice big biner for a handle on it and pull that rope.... not that bad actually

I've used the Beal Backup Line (5mm) and it's pretty cool. you can use a micro to help pull the line. plus, they don't really advertise it this way, but apparently people rap on it? I only used it as a tag line.

I saw this 4mm rap line at rock and resole, and it's crazy skinny! seems more than 1mm smaller than the Beal line. it doesn't really seem like it would work in a micro traxion (has anyone tried this?) and I definitely wouldn't rap on it. but it's so small! would be interested to hear from someone who has actually used it.

How well does a 4mm knot to 10mm? Or do you just knot block it at the anchor and always pull skinny?

4mm is pull cord only, and pretty sure it would work in the microtraxion, ive tried in the past with 3mm cord and the micro grabs it

Ok. Thanks for the various pull techniques. Now I see the possibilities more clearly.

Okay, I ordered one and it supposed to arrive Tuesday.  I hate climbing on doubles and have had to pull shinanigans ( soloing down and  belayed down climbing by a lowered partner) in the past. I have been searching/ researching Reepschnur techniques.  Seems like 4mm is close to the edge of uncharted ground.  I will try to post back with my findings, in the mean time, does anyone know of a source from edelrid for suggested techniques for use?

Would you use it in the alpine environment as aN UL rap rope? It'd be a hell of a drop in carrying weight.

Also which descenders take a 4mm line?

Using it as a stand alone to rap on seems really questionable, but perhaps doable?  At 6kn strength, seems like it should be almost as strong as 6mm nylon cord.  I wouldn’t do it, but I bet someone will.
I even have questions on how you tie a 9.4 mm lead line to a 4mm pull cord.  Perhaps a flat grapevine?

I would just do this:

Yeah, I see that. You have to have a biner to block anyway.  Perhaps adds a touch more possibility of snagging. A flat overhand will roll on an edge.

Gibbs. I’m trying to find something useful on the internet about it that I know I’ve seen before but the internet had turned into instagram videos and occasional references to Andy Kirkpatrick. It’s better than just an edk when you have two ropes of very different size.

On a big wall last year a friend used a 5mm dyneema line as a tag line, whether it was to pull up that big gear he didn’t want to have at the start of the route, or for the haul line on hard (for him) free pitches. I could see this as a great even lighter alternative.

I finally had a few minutes to go mess with the 4mm tag line.  Here's what I did and my thoughts, along with a few photos. I have still to use it in the wild.   Any feedback from the tag line peanut gallery is welcome.   I have a haul system in my garage so I hung a quick link off it to simulate a rap anchor.  I hooked up the blocker biner in two different configurations.

As you can see I used a euro death knot, backed up with a triple fishermans around the tail of the climbing rope  to tie the two lines together.  I bounce tested ( full body weight) the knot against the quick link with no issues.  I then hooked up a traxion to the 4mm tag line, clipped off the climbing rope and bounce tested the knot and the grip of the traxion on the 4mm line.   It got really tight but did not budge.

After passing those tests I pulled various configurations around a 90° edge with the tag line.  The one where the blocking biner was not clipped to the rope pulled really smooth, due to the rolling motion of both overhand knots.  The one being pulled by clipping the tagline to the blocking biner which was around the rope was worst, but still pulled.

The little haul bag I used for the tagline worked really well.  I have no reservations about using this in the wild for both hauling a small pack and as a tagline for full length rappels.

As a side note... I tried a tibloc to pull the 4mm, it sucked, was hard to use.  I think I will get a nanotraxion, should work great.  Feedback welcome...but not about my garage.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
