We are starting to plan a vacation, but aren't exactly settled on a destination yet.

All we know is that:

  • We will be traveling for about one month, around June/July
  • We love hiking and sport climbing
  • Would be open for any cool adventure in general (kayaking down a river, jungle exploration, etc.)

We've been eyeing these countries (but would love to hear about other exotic or lesser known suggestions from the community):

Vietnam, Slovakia, Turkey, Nepal, Mexico, Kyrgyzstan.

Thailand since you can explore the jungle too. There are several very nice locations in they country for this.

Krabi is probably the best crag (limestone, sport, bolted),

FYI - It's monsoon season in southern Thailand from May to October.

This may not be be exotic enough for you but you could do a lot of bolted adventure climbing in the Algoma and Thunder Bay areas of Ontario. Riverside Rock alone has a collection of bolted multi pitch routes that could keep you going for two weeks. Lots of hiking and canoeing on offer. And the bugs up there at that time of year will rival those any jungle has to boast of. If this piques your interest at all I can point you to all the climbing beta you would need.

This is a tough combination that I'm not sure the places you're looking at meet. Most of those spots will either be bad weather in June/July (hot and/or rainy), or aren't really known as sport climbing destinations.

Some better options are in the southern hemisphere. Various spots where June-August is prime season (cool and dry), in areas that will feel adventurous, and with other hiking/travel options.

Peru: Cusco/Pitumarca. High Andes sport climbing. Lots of hiking/trekking that is popular around there.

Brasil. Serro Do Cipo is a major sport climbing area.

South Africa. Several good sport climbing options to choose from. Waterval Boven is an obvious starting point. Then go to a national park or game reserve to see wildlife.

Itatim - Brazil is a very exotic place with great weather, easy approaches and awesome climbing! Sport, Trad, Mutipitch, etc. A truly unique place! Two of the fifty Brazilian classic climbs are in Itatim.

If you like to extend your adventure Chapada Diamantina National Park is only 3hrs drive from Itatim, and have hundreds of outdoor acitivites, from climbing to cave explorations, amazing trekkings, etc.

Puerto Rico!

We have loads of accesible sport routes and multipitch climbing on the island with rock types mainly being limestone but we also have granite and basalt. If coming in June/July we even have DWS in the north coast avalaible. Climbing here is not very popular but it is fully developed and ready to take all the traffic it could handle. Check out our MP page for photos and if you find yourself interested contact me and I’d be happy to help with anything and everything.

Besides climbing, the island is filled with loads of outdoor adventures like El Yunque Rainforest, surfing from beginner to advanced beaches, caves from ones you can just walk, to ones you have descend on a rope and make it out in another town from where you started, world class canyoneering and obviously hiking!

Overall the atmosphere in Puerto Rico is tropical, relaxing and you will find yourself in a unique place where you can find a lot of things to do in a very small island, with mountains, reefs, different forests and hundreds of beaches!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
