I’m hoping to get some input into maybe the safety of one or the other?
After a thorough search for a new helmet i’ve found the 2 who fit my noggin best. The comfort level is very similar. But one has EPP and one EPS foam.
Any insights in the pro’s & cons? I’m mostly thinking safety wise, but i’m also curious about durability and such.
The helmets are the Edelrid Salathe Lite and the CAMP Storm. (The salathe uses a webbing backing and storm a plastic one with a weel, don’t know if that’s important?)
I climb lead outside, mostly in summer so no fear of ice dropping.
Safety for lead climbing (side and back impacts) don't follow any certification, petzl have one in house but that's the best you get.
Any thing anyone says about safety differences will be pure speculation, though we can see both materials can be adequately safe if they are used appropriately.
Durability wise PP will be more durable in general than PS, but the biggest impact on durability is how you treat it. Obvious distinctions can be made between beefy ABS shells and paper thin polycarbonate shells and of course the very fragile exposed PP and PS helmets without a shell to speak of.
I don’t look at specific materials necessarily. Though, a “hard shell” helmet will last longer. They make some very light ones now. The one safety feature I always get these days in all my helmets is MIPS. There aren’t a ton in the climbing helmet market yet, but there are few with more and more every year.
As with a lot of safety stuff that all carries the same ratings - the important thing is whether you find it comfortable. I wear a Petzl Meteor III because I thought it was the most comfortable to wear for 12+ hours. If it's not comfortable you're not going to want to wear it. https://routerlogin.uno/
