TX4 Boot replacement, recommendation
|
I have had multiple pairs of La Sportiva TX4 Boots and love them for climbing and caving. The old model has been discontinued and I am looking to move on. |
|
Actually want to move on or by necessity? If necessity, try keeping your eyes on ebay/geartrade/etc, I consistently find (newish) old pairs with light/no use for less than 1/2 retail |

Does anyone have anecdotal comparisons of the the old model with the "new," in particular for standing in aiders with the occasional free move? https://www.lasportivausa.com/tx4-evo-mid-gtx.html Reviews on the site are not particularly confidence inspiring. I have a few pairs mothballed for the future, but they don't last forever... |

If your feet run narrow but you otherwise like tx4s it might be okay, they most certainly aren't for my hobbit feet. |

I have both and can confirm the newer feel stiffer and tighter |

I saw they just released a wide foot version, the evo st. Maybe it's using the old last and they'll make a boot out of it? |

I have the old TX4 and the new one .....I got the TX4 Retro, which is the TX4 EVO now. I feel they fit the same, the new one is a little stiffer which i like for edging, feel more solid for hiking, a little heavier. |

Just for clarity--there's now a TX4 EVO/Retro (narrower than the old model, stiff last), and the TX4 EVO ST (as wide as the old model, but still with the new level of stiffness)? Is that correct? I can't find any official info from LS explaining what the difference between the two is-- |

I'm hoping that's the case. I haven't sprung for a pair of the ST until I see some reviews saying it's the same shape as before. |

Christian B wrote: The OP specified the boot (aka, TX4 Mid). Are you referring to the “normal” (low top) TX4 or the boot? I was in boulder a couple weeks ago and tried on my normal size, as well as +/- 1/2 size each way, I was surprised that it felt basically identical to the old school TX4. Obviously that black/yellow/red evo from the last couple years was ridiculously narrow, but this new version seems pretty close. Here’s the side by side of each, at 46.0… obviously the shape is different, and there *is* very slight additional snugness at the great toe joint (where most people have a bunion). I think this increased snugness is minimal and very liveable. The heel cup now has a hard (prob plastic) insert, which may cause issues for some. Fits me fine but ymmv. edit: Isaac, the shape of the sole is clearly different… but honestly doesn’t feel different, at least not significantly enough to be noticeable, to me. Might be more noticeable in smaller sizes, perhaps having Phelps feet makes it easier for changes to get lost in all that volume. These comments/observations are all in relation to the standard version, I have not tried the ST yet *(wasn’t even aware of it). |

The Arcteryx Konseal is pretty sweet. Bought them as business casual work shoes. As luck would have it, I also used them to approach. The soles and toe caps are stiffer and more protective than my TX2s. Pretty nice when my feet are dogged. Might be comparable to TX4 if you don’t object to Arteryx taking all your beer money. |

Okay I've gotten to try the tx4 evo, evo mid, and hike mid side-by-side. The evo and evo mid have the same last -- narrower and lower volume, equivalent to the R -- and stiffer than the previous models. If your feet are normal to narrow these might be just fine, and the stiffness is probably better for climbing. The hike mid has an even wider toe box and is perhaps even softer than the old tx4s. If you like hiking in tx4s this would be a good alternative, especially if you have wide feet. However the softness and roomy toe box make them not as nice for scrambling/low fifth climbing. Still haven't seen the evo ST. I'm hoping it's the same last as the old tx4/tx3, I don't see why they had to change the shape at all. Edit: looking again I don't know that the ST it's actually wide foot, the language is the same for both it and the standard evo. Might just be a synthetic version. Bummer. |
