Solo Climbing and Travel Based in Barcelona (Mallorca, Font, Switzerland, Spain)
|
Hello, I am going to be traveling to Barcelona a number of times over the next three years as part of a training program. I am going in March and October every year for 3 years with a third trip in the third year. I booked my plane ticket with 6 extra days this first trip in order to get some climbing time in. I am wondering if people are able to help me out with some logistics for some of these areas and how to get to them from Barcelona. I think I am most excited about deep water soloing, bouldering, and sport climbing in that order. I would also eventually love to check out places like the Verdon but the 4 areas I listed in the title are higher on my priority list. For March I am leaning heavily towards deep water soloing in Mallorca. From what I can tell it is better to fly from Barcelona, which seems much faster and cheaper than the ferry. The accommodation is what I am still having trouble with. I found some reports that most of the DWS is on the East Coast, and that maybe Porto Cristo is a good option to find a place to stay. It seems like it is all hotels/Airbnbs/rentals, is that right? I found this tool from The Crag that has a rental search feature, and I am seeing the cheaper rentals as something like $90-$100 per night, is that what would make the most sense for a solo traveler? https://www.thecrag.com/en/climbing/spain/mallorca/accommodation - I am trying to keep it on the cheaper side while realizing it's not going to be that cheap. I am planning to order the Rockfax guidebook, but it is currently out of stock. I am about to subscribe to the digital version and maybe that will help me narrow down places to stay? Does anybody have any tips? It seems like I would need to book a flight to Palma de Mallorca, rent a car at the airport, and then have accommodations arranged somewhere on the East Coast? Has anybody traveled solo to Mallorca to DWS? I'll have to check the guidebook when I get it, but my impression is that there are plenty of options for spots that are accessible without a boat or a paddle board and that would be suitable for a solo climber, is that correct? I would just need to bring a lot of shoes and a handful of chalk bags, right? I saw some people recommend a rope/harness/couple of draws in order to rap in to some climbs. I'm not planning on doing anything super tall, so not sure if this would be necessary for me, but I could easily do it. I've heard renting a car at the airport is the best way, does anybody have an opinion of which is one of the better sites to search for a car rental? I know that it is important to specify automatic for those of us who aren't good at stick. This is the website that I was searching on that is giving options for $25 a day or $200 for 6 days after fees which seems reasonable - https://www.sixt.com The second option is going bouldering in Font. Is the train the best way to get there: taking the train from Barcelona to Paris, renting a car in Paris, then driving down and having accommodations booked near Font? I found a search that said the train would be about $180 round trip. I saw a recommendation for the climbers hostel, which I have bookmarked - that definitely seems like the most cost efficient option. I would prefer a private room but could deal with a shared room if it's a lot cheaper. I also saw somebody recommend Le Refuge De Milly - The Big Island, which has a Moonboard which sounds nice. Then I could rent crash pads in Font? My first thought was that Font would be a lot cheaper but with the extra cost of the train, I don't think it would be that much cheaper that Mallorca and Mallorca would be a more unique experience. Either way one of my trips to Spain will almost certainly involve a trip to Font. How about to go bouldering in Switzerland? Magic Wood is one of the obvious choices, and I just haven't looked into the best way to get there from Barcelona yet. I also don't know much about the different zones in Switzerland and need to do more research of what would be good for a solo traveler where I could rent crash pads and climb good boulders in the 6C-7C range. I watch a lot of media but it all kind of blurs together, and I don't know about what would be better for me: Magic Wood, Cresciano, Chironico, Brione, Val Bavona, etc. I found this link with a little description of all of them: https://natureclimbing.com/blogs/news/the-best-bouldering-areas-in-switzerland. I of course also want to check out the sport climbing in Spain. I know Siurana and Margalef are very close, which I would love to sample. I am not going to do those in March, just due to not wanting to deal with finding a partner. I will likely hit those areas in one of the later trips, and it seems a little easier logistically (rent a car in Barcelona, stay in Cornudella?). My wife will likely come with for some of the trips, so I would have a belayer for that time, which seems easier than trying to hook up with partners there. If anybody has any beta for any of these areas, or any other areas that I should check out, please let me know! |

Bump, any thoughts to the safety of traveling alone to DWS in Mallorca but just going to more popular areas where there will be other people around in case something happens? I think I need to decide between Mallorca and Font soon to book accomodations. |

Hey! Can't help you with what you're looking for, but if you'd like to make a quick trip from Barcelona at some point this march, (Siruana, Margalef or whatever) let me know! I'm staying in Lleida. |

Nice! I decided on Font this time and already booked my flight and hostel in France, so won’t be able to this time. Are you out in Spain permanently or often? Could do that for one of the future trips. |
