Mammut 9.5 gym classic durability
|
Wondering what other's experience has been with this rope. Picked up a 40m 9.5 gym classic end of July. On average climb 1x a week and only used indoors, I'm ~195lb. Within a few months started to become noticeably chunky when lowering as if the core/sheath are bunching up and makes for an annoyingly jerky lower. Don't see any flat spots, sheath looks barley worn... visually rope is in perfect shape. It's bad enough now I'm going to see if they'll do a warranty. I *think* this was the first production of the 9.5 classic with the thicker "gym" sheath for durability, which is why I'm suspicious it's not just my voluptuous figure. Have had sterling, mammut, edelrid, maxim ropes in the past and none have performed like this. It replaced a 9.8 boa eco that was in rotation for 3 years before it went flat. |

Mine also bunched up badly. I would attribute this in part to it not being the right length for the gym that I climb in, which only requires a 30. If your rope is always quite a bit longer than it needs to be, the sheath will get pushed towards the middle. Maybe the design of this rope is also particularly prone to sheath bunching. |

rappelling a little over 20m (so the ends are hanging and free to untwist) can help reset the sheath/core if there are twists or migration. |

I’ve always liked the Mammut 9.5 and 9.8 for the gym, but sheath bunching has always happed to me, but not usually for over a year of twice a week use. As mentioned, the bunch ends up in the middle and is usually only an issue when lowering, which is generally fine. |

I've been using mine for almost 2 years now frequency of use per week comes and goes but mine hasn't bunched yet and I'm also a heavier climber |

Opened a warranty claim with mammut and they offered to ship a new rope (despite my initial purchase being through a 3rd party vendor) I'm skeptical a new rope is going to perform any different but hats off to them for excellent customer service |

Hey Micah got any pics of what happened? I've got a crag care that is wearing waaay faster than my last one. |

it's hard to see visually, just some slight variations in thickness. Wear wise it's in fine shape, sheath looks great. |

Maybe sell it and get the craggin classic if you like mammut. It generally handles better and has a bit more beef to make it more durable. The gym classic is nice because it's light, but that has tradeoffs! |

I really like the 9.8mm Crag classic dry. Its been a great rope and super durable. |
