Hey all

I’m visiting northern Wisconsin/upper peninsula MIand drove into Bessemer, MI and saw this big rock/cliff as you come into the town …anyone know anything about this? Usually come through in summer and wanted to check it out. Is there any known history of climbing there? Not sure what it’s called but looked pretty big from the road . Thanks!

Not sure if there’s any established climbing around Bessemer, but there’s decent rock around Iron Mountain at Carney Crag

Lots of access issues in da yoop. Go check out crystal chandelier while you’re in the neighborhood. Good pitch of ice

Most of the western UP is chossy conglomerate.

There is a crag at Norwich Ledge.

If I remember correctly, the largest one is on private property, but there are several outcrops around so you could be talking about a different one. You can check the land ownership for yourself: https://app.regrid.com/us/mi/gogebic#

Also, it's unlikely that those cliffs are conglomerate, the Jacobsville formation doesn't quite reach Bessemer.  Probably basalt, a band of the same stuff that makes up Silver Mountain sits just north of the town.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
