Burly Approach Shoe Recommendation (like Scarpa Zen Pro, 5.10 Camp Four, etc)
|
I've historically gotten great use from the older 5.10 Camp Four approach shoe, and more recently the Scarpa Zen Pro. These are more like stiff 'light hikers' with thoughtful soles / toe shapes that lend themselves more to scrambling / low 5th than a light hiker or trail runner. I really like this style of shoe for long scrambling days (I live in WA). Both of these are discontinued, and my Zens are nearly worn out. I'm seeking suggestions for replacements that are similar (somewhat stiff and supportive, not the best at 5th class climbing). When I research, I don't see many obvious replacements. Maybe the Scarpa Mescalito? Edit to add I prefer not having Gore Tex in such a shoe. |

Salewa Alp Trainers are really ideal for this if they fit your feet. Mammut used to have good options, but they stopped making approach shoes and their techier hiking shoes are mostly goretex. |

I've been quite happy with the Mescalitos. I've had them for almost a year and put a ton of miles on them. I think that they'll fit what you're looking for perfectly |

I tried the mescilitoes and didn't think they were a replacement for the zen pros, more flexible). I now have a pair of selewa alp trainers which are actually stiffer and burlier than the zen pros. They are becoming better as they break in. They are my daily shoes for 3+ months. I wish scarpa would bring back the zen pros. |

Have you tried any of the la sportiva tx shoes? |

Pat, I think the Salewa Wildfire Edge are stiffer than most modern day shoes. Also, La Sportiva still makes the Boulder X which is pretty stiff. My last recommendation would be to find a hiking shoe you love, and add a custom sticky-rubber resole to it. |
