Without knowing the size and weight of the pads, its apples to oranges.. carrying 5 organic big pads is very different then 5 small metolious pads.

For short approaches and solo bouldering sessions the biggest load i have carry regularly is, two organic big pads (5") thick and flashed rollup (shogun) on my back strapped together, plus side carry another shogun or small organic pad.

A few times I have carried the above 5 pads all at once.. plus my bag and brush for a 1/10 mile approach with 150' elevation gain, but it would have been better to just make two trips. Still felt lighter then some of the haul bags i have schlepped up to el cap in the last.

3 is the most Iv ever carried and I’m only 5’1 so I’m sure it’s hilarious looking

I’ve been carrying 3 for my current project; A Metolius Recon with an older, smaller Metolius pad strapped to it and my climbing pack stuffed in that one. The other Metolius pad is a smaller version of the Recon (don’t know the name) I borrowed from a friend. I tried strapping all 3 pads together to carry on my back but it felt like the weight was going to tear the shoulder straps off the Recon so I’ve been just carrying the 3rd pad suitcase style. When I get ready to go for the full send I’m gonna need a 4th pad so I’m envisioning 2 trips in and out to have the necessary padding.

2/3 for a regular day, big org and two mad rocks. Have hiked up to 5 on an uphill two mile logging road, two big org, three regular, and some old foam as a blubber.

I have never suitcased a pad, monkey arms cause em to drag and it's just a pain. Big organic always on my back, and stack the rest three to four deep/ put the rest on top. Just about perfectly balanced when I put my head down and lean a bit to hike. With a bunch of pads, backpack goes on the front. Learned to roll/smoke while walking to fill the time.

Hardest part is putting the damn thing on and getting standing.

My standard kit at the local crag is 1 mondo, 1 regular bifold, 1 thin bifold and a blubber so technically 4 pads but more like 3. Sometimes I briefcase an extra bifold if I need the foam and the approach is short, but in my experience if I need more than 3 pads its worth doing 2 trips to save my knees.

I once carried 3 pads- one big metolius tri fold plus two smaller pads (a black diamond and a metolius) up Little Rock Canyon to look for new boulders. Not my best moment.

I once carried 6 pads 20ft to the boulder. That 1 minute made me feel invincible.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
