Ropes stuck on Guides Wall
|
Greetings! Our party of 4 had to rapidly descend from Guides wall this evening and left our ropes on the last rap tree. If anyone happens to climb this and is feeling kind, we’d love our ropes back! 707-too-zero-5-zero-zero-zero-ate |

The title says stuck, the post says left. Which is it? Being they are on the last rap why not hike back up and get them this morning? Details are missing. |

Hi Allen, sorry for my initial brevity. They are both stuck and left. We all safely reached the ground but then could not pull the ropes. Needing to evacuate a panicking friend, we did not take the time to ascend these ropes and free them. We believe they are pinched in a crack just down and right of the final belay tree, which may have been avoided if we stopped at the intermediate set of chains. If anyone is descending the route, it should be easy enough to unstick them from above. We have no other ropes, so we can’t lead back up to unstick them. |

The additional details help but it still leaves me with questions. I can understand the circumstances but you note not ascending the ropes to free them. That implies both ends are on near the ground. But then you note not having other ropes, so not being able to lead back up. So still unsure of the situation. If the ends are near the ground, fix one end, jug back up the other end, and reset the rap. If that is not the case, and you have no rope, you may need others to free them on their way down*. In either case, why not hike back up this morning? There will likely be other parties on the route. *Even if both rope ends are not on the ground there are ways to safely ascend a stuck rope via "leading." It may or may not be possible and depends much on one's abilities and comfort. If someone does bring your ropes down they might get dropped off with the Jenny Lake Rangers. So leave them your info. |

While I appreciate the concern and the input, I was intentionally omitting details for simplicity and privacy. We were aware of the fix it & ascend it strategy, but as aforementioned, circumstances did not allow for this, yesterday nor today. The intention of the post was simply to make other climbers aware of the presence of our ropes and facilitate a possible Good Samaritan return. Thanks for the beta on Jenny Lake rangers, we’ll definitely check in there. |

Teagen, in situations like you have described it really helps to include some additional details. Which I was attempting to tease out because simple posts about returning gear often become booty alert posts. Something to the affect of: Due circumstance beyond our control, we needed to get one of our party down yesterday and unfortunately on the last rappel our ropes got stuck. If not for this person's needs we would have reascended the ropes. Unfortunately we are not able to return today. If someone retrieves our ropes, we would greatly appreciate getting them back. Happy to pay for shipping and beers for the efforts. gives enough details so that request is on good samaritan side vs booty side. Good luck. |

Thank you, Allen. I appreciate the edits! I’ll keep that in mind, but hoping there’s no next time. |

Allen Sanderson wrote: I thought the initial post was pretty clear and the details of why and how the ropes are stuck+their inability to go back the next day seem pretty academic to the main point of the post. Overall it’s a simple message: ropes are stuck and we’d appreciate their return. The details you want added don’t seem like they add much important information. The micromanaging and frequent general armchair judgement (granted you come off as fairly non-judgemental compared to a lot of these threads) of MP lost and found posts is baffling. I guess it’s good for visibility. |
