Access to Mazama’s Fun Rock endangered

Just learned about this:

“For nearly three generations, the Fun Rock climbing area in Mazama, WA, has been a beloved community space, accessible thanks to the generosity of the Northwest Outward Bound School (NWOBS). Outward Bound owns the land where we park to access the Forest Service crags and has allowed this access through a handshake agreement. Regretfully, NWOBS has fallen into hard times.

Now, with the campus shuttered indefinitely, the future of public access to Fun Rock is at risk. Losing this access would be a heartbreaking blow to the climbing community, local families, and guides who rely on this space for recreation, education.”

People say a lot of things about burdo, but that man created a goddam economy. Hopefully economic pressure alone is enough to keep it open.

I understand the WCC and Access Fund are working to transfer the NWOBS land to the Forest Service. Hoping for the best.

If you hear about anything we can do to help, please post it here. Fun Rock is where my wife and I learned to climb while I was a grad student at NCI, I'd hate to see it close.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
