what was the funky rappel setup tom cruise used at the paris olympics?

Didn’t really watch the olympics but I just saw a clip of Tom Cruise rapelling into the stadium.

It looks like he was using a chest harness with the attachment point between his shoulder blades, but he had a descent speed adjustment device strapped to his right calf.  It looked like he was using that towards the end to slow his speed.

I’m guessing that this equipment is from the professional rigging world (not our recreational climbing world), but does anyone know what devices he was using?

Looks like a figure 8 rappel device on the back of his waist. I'm pretty sure the bag on his leg is just stashing the excess rope.

I'm not too sure, but it looks like a fairly standard figure-8 type descender rigged on the back somehow.  Whether that's a concealed chest harness or something else, I don't know; it sort of looks to be extended from the waist, rather than on a dorsal ring (anybody with experience doing Aussie rappels?).  The calf thing is just a rope bag.  There's a pretty good freeze-frame shot at the beginning of this video.

I've done an Aussie rappel. Just put your harness on backwards. However I did it on a 90 degree wall not free hanging like he did and I had a fireman's belay. Tom is actually more badass than I thought. If he lost control of the rope he would have bounced. I think he probably did have a chest harness on to keep him from nose diving.

Seeing this made we wonder if he did that motorcycle BASE jump for reals, so I looked it up and he did. That's very badass to do numerous BASE jumps on an concave wall. He's still crazy, but I got a lot more respect for his athleticism and stunts.

Figure of 8?

Safer, smoother and without twisting the rope:

No, the calf rope bag is essential.

Doing a rap that long with the rope hanging down (the usual case) the weight of the rope will result in too much friction to move at all.

With the calf rope bag the amount of friction is low and consistent all the way down.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
