So I'll be in Chile/Argentina in early October, planning to hit El Chalten, and was wondering if it's worth hoping for 1) some cragging or 2) one of the easier peaks like Aguja de l's. Will there still be too much snow and ice? Should I just plan on enjoying the view?
There is a lot to do in el chalten, bouldering around town or craggin at pared condor. Definetely worth it. Or hike to the base of the glaciars and scout around.
October still gonna be mild cold , snowy and icy. This years precipitations in Chile and Argentinian patagonia have been at least 40% more than last year.
"easier" peaks....Gorra blanca, Neumayer...tons to do.
The easiest beta is pataclimb.com Rolos page and the guia escalada el chalten that there is a book store with some copies state side (links and all in pata climb). Details explained and try to get the last edition.
Thanks. Do you expect I'll have to deal with any problematic seasonal shutdowns as far as restaurants, groceries, and lodging (although I'm currently planning to have a camper van for that last one).
Not really but could be. Seasonal closure are very rare....like covid. The town income is cause of tourism. So everyone gonna work hard for it. There are plenty of hostels where you can van camp. Bring your re supply gear from chile (same prices as USA and fair stock in Natales or Punta arenas) and when you cross buy your groceries in "el turbio" or "calafate" if you are coming from the south. Yo can save A LOT of money like that
