Highly recommend checking out Seneca Rocks Climbing School down there, they do both guided days out or classes to teach you how to trad climb etc. They're located out of the Gendarme climbing shop. Seneca Rocks Mountain Guides also has great guides who offer similar classes/ experiences. It may look a little expensive but safe mentorship/ your life is always worth any amount of money IMO.

Good luck and enjoy! It's a really unique area with amazing climbing!

Agreed on the benefits of a guide book. Also, whole there are plenty of climbs that probably can be done with only passive pro (and certainly were climbed that way in the 70's), Seneca is often described as a bit of a sandbag. Climbs that go at 5.7 can feel a harder. Greenwall is a fabulous 5.7, but I wouldn't want to lead it if I was an emerging 5.7 leader.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
