Sun hoody over helmet
|
Searched for but no results in forum. I’ve used the BD Alpenglow and the Patagonia tropic, I especially like the latter since it feels thinner than the BD. Any others that stay on over a helmet? |

I tried 3 different hoodies before settling on REI's offering from 2023. I'm normally a medium, but the large is just right and is super comfy over a helmet. Doesn't stink. Has held up well after maybe 30 or 40 days of use. And reasonably priced. Previously wore an OR sun hoody from like 2017, discontinued and I didn't like what it was replaced with- fabric too tightly woven. Otherwise I'm a bit of an OR fanboy. |

I like my OR one. Not sure which one it is… Got it last year though |

Get a bit of velcro from a fabric store/online, whatever. Square on your helmet, square on the hood. |

For a very thin one, I've been quite happy with the OR Echo Hoodie. I've got two & they are both pretty shredded ... but as long as you don't mind looking like you've been attached by a bear they keep most of the sun off and aren't stuffy. |

I have one from Eddie Bauer that has a draw string closure on the hood so it stays on over a helmet. |

OR Astroman All others I've used just seem to fall off the helmet. Arcteryx one isn't too bad. It doesn't stay on as tightly but it does the job. |

The Mountain Equipment Glace has worked well over a helmet for me. |

OR and NRS are my favorite sun gear. |

OR echo is my fav, and it works over my helmet on the one that i sized up. Worth noting that upf and spf numbers are not equivalent. Everyone is different but I’ve never gotten burned through the echo fabric |

Why not just put the hood under the helmet? |

The NW alpine sun hoody is meant to go over a helmet. It’s quite large |

The paragon 220 sun hoodies are great! They come in lots of fun colors too. I wear them seven days a week once it gets into the 80s here in Phoenix. Great for under the helmet and over. They even fit over my mtb helmet pretty good. And they are cheap! Around $12-$14 depending on the source. I always get them from opentip.com. The they even come in hi viz yellow so i wear one of those under my road bike helmet, tucked behind my ears so it only sits on the top back third of my head, but still covers up my neck. I like to ride in the afternoons here even when its 110 so top ventilation is key. Over the helmet would be for the road but it blocks the view of my sunglass mounted mirror. |

Big fan of the Rab Sonic, personally. Light, fast-drying, keeps them rays off my neck and forearms. |

I'm a fan of over the helmet Hoodies. They look better, have more ventilation, give more shade to the front of my face, and I can pull the hood off when I get into a shaded belay stance. They can also be draped all the way over a baseball bill when not wearing a helmet, this provides much more protection and shade for approaches. The downside is that when you if you are not wearing a hat or helmet the hood is bit and unruly. Overall I'm sold on the big hood. Another feature that I've discovered I always want is a front opening. I have a 1/4 zip no-name sun hoodie from Amazon with a big over-the-helmet hood. Being able to open the neck is magnificent. Sadly, the material is a little thicker than I want if it's 85+ degrees. I also have a North Face Dome Pullover sun hoodie that is lighter and can open with buttons, but the fabric pills badly. My Mountain Hardware Crater Lake sun hoodie has great fabric (good for 85+ days) but the hood is small and can only be used under a helmet and the neck comes up to my chin feel which makes it feel like a sweat lodge around my neck. If the MH had a larger hood and a 1/4 zip it would be the Holy Grail of sun hoodies. |
