This really does bring me down some. It was one of my favorite things to do in the summer around here. Curious if all the drilling is going to fuck up some of the route. Sigh ..

I heard about this just a bit ago, not exactly a local but close enough I enjoy s ridge every summer.  Is this closure for the duration of the installation or an indefinite closure?

Check out Mineral Slab for a another route to add to the rotation.

For the duration of the installations. Reopening scheduled for mid October.

Looks like it also impacts the Hellgate climbing area.  See map here:

I don't see how helicopters dropping boulders is much different than a normal day at hellgate.

SLCA info with walls that will close: https://www.saltlakeclimbers.org/news/2024/7/1/area-closure-alert-july-8-october-24

It's funny how hellgate condo is closed but the road is open

Using wireless communications, Wyssen Avalanche Towers deploy explosive charges that hang just over ground to trigger an avalanche. Previously, avalanche and road crews used howitzers to trigger approximately 330 controlled avalanches each season. But with the Wyssen Avalanche Towers, crews will be able to trigger avalanches from a safe location and greater efficiency.

Herein lies the issue. UDOT cannot continue to use a howitzer for avalanche control work. The Dept. Defense is not allowing shells to be used. These installations will be throughout the Wasatch. However, wait til UDOT tries to put them further down canyon (to the west) which is Federally designated Wilderness. The Twin Peaks Wilderness boundary is approximately 200' on the Little Cottonwood side on the Canyon. That boundary is also an issue for the gonadola.

I thought it was more of an issue with all you old Korean vets not able to shoot straight any more Allen.

I understand the issue. I'm just over that canyon in the winter unfortunately and that ridge was one of the last things I enjoyed doing up there in the summer. (Get off my yard.)

I think Cumming should just get off his ass and hike up there at 3 am and drop bombs in by hand.

Does anyone know if this includes the East Ridge of Superior? which is the standard hiking descent, Cottonwood Traverse descent, and on the WURL…

My understanding from their replies on Instagram is that it does include the East Ridge as well.

I thought I remembered reading that the closure was from “sun up to sun down” but can’t find that documented anywhere now. Maybe that was just a bad reading on my part?

That is what I read as well.

Seems to be open now...ahead of schedule?

Signage is gone and so is heli at Alta.  Short closure later in August/early September to finish assembly?

Seems like S. Ridge of Superior back in play...

FYI I tried to do the S Ridge today but the closure was reinstated. Looks like it might just be closed today though.
