Spain in Oct.? Recommendation
|
Hello! Looking for a trip to Spain and would love to climb outdoors there. I myself love outdoor bouldering but my friends are more into sport climbing (one of them likes multipitch more specifically). We will be somewhere around the northeast. Please recommend are for climbing/bouldering! Thanks. PS. we also looked up some websites and found out "Mallorca" seems to be a nice place to visit. But a friend couldnt swim at all. Not sure if its a good idea to visit an island. Thanks! |

Grade range? There's an immense amount of climbing in the NE of Spain. Aragon and Catalonia. Browse the limited info here on the 'proj to get an idear of crags/locations. Riglos, Mascun, Monserrat, Col de Nargo, Siurana...etc etc. Mallorca is a big island...as in, you wouldn't know you're on an island. Quite a bit of the climbing is near a beach but swimming not an issue at all. Multipitch in the interior. Fun spot. Known for car break-ins so be mindful. Good times! |

I am also looking for climbing suggestion for a trip to Spain in October. We are looking to sport climb 5.10s and like dry weather in the 60s, limestone (but not polished) or conglomerate, maybe some multiptich. El Chorro is looking like one option. Thoughts on that location? Catalonia is another option and I see some say that is the best climbing in Spain? Do people agree? I also got a recommendation for Costa Blanca. Thoughts? |

Hi Katie, I'd say the El Chorro is the best option. October is complicated in the north because of the weather. In Andalucia you have lots of places for sport climbing. Probably el Chorro is one of the biggest, but... Granada: Los Cahorros Alfacar Los Vados (here mulitpich) Málaga: El Chorro Villanueva del Rosario Valle de Abdalajis El Torcal Cañón de Manilva Cádiz: San Bartolo Jaén: Reguchillo La Serrezuela (pegalajar) also mulitpich and boulder All these places are limestone, except San Bartolo, that's sandstone. There is a bouldering área in Almería, at Cabo de Gata natural park, on a beach called monsul that has this kind of rock you mentioned conglomerate. I Hope this helps |

I'll be based in Benarraba (north of Gibraltar, west of Malaga) in September and October and will be looking for partners! |

I'll be back in El Chorro late Oct in case any of you want a partner I can show you the non-polished routes (and everything else!) |

I think we will not chase the grade. would be more interested in the local classic climbs and/or the local climbing culutre and community! Also thanks for the information about Mallorca. Might be a silly quesiton, but why isn't swimming an issue? (my friend really cant swim :OO) |

GumbyBear Chen wrote: Swimming isn't ( necessarily) an issue because the majority of crags are inland---it is a very big island. Even a good number of those crags close to the water aren't true sea cliffs, so can be climbed on without any aquatic shenanigans. Of course, it is a different story if you opt for DWS, but that style, while well-publicized, does not represent the bulk of the climbing available there. |

It's an amazing place. But climbing takes time to get used to. Have fun. ;) |
