Charleston Opening up?
|
As of an update, 5/23/24, from gomtcharleston.com, looks like Mount Charleston is starting to open back up. Cathedral rock trail still seems to be officially closed but from the map, unless I'm reading it wrong, it may be possible to get to some of the climbing around cathedral rock(looking at Sonar wall mainly). Any thoughts on if summer climbing is possible? Are there any risks of trying to get up there this season regarding the forest service? Thanks for the input. Update: https://www.gomtcharleston.com/spring-mountains-weekly-update/ Closure map: |

The way I read that map, and locating Sonar on it (I also overlaid a topo) tells me that Sonar is outside the closure. But you’ll have to choose your own adventure to get there. The slopes under Echo are loose and snow covered. A little bushwhacking and you may be rewarded with a less-crowded crag this summer. I wouldn’t go galavanting off the south loop trail with a ranger or large hiking group watching. Try to go stealth mode and keep it on the down-low. |

There is a big closure sign posted at the start of the cathedral rock trailhead with risk of $5000 fine and jail time. Who knows if they try to enforce it though. Might be best to try some of the other areas with trails open so they dont hit you with trespassing. |

Any beta for areas that *are* open? |
|
I was there last Friday for the first time (was in Vegas for a wedding). Was pretty stoked to finally be heading up there and climbing with my son for the first time in a long time. Was not so stoked when we got to the road block...had no idea it was closed. Ended up climbing at the Weakness Wall, Cathedral Rock. That area is open and we saw a few hikers but no other climbers all day. Cooling off in the water under the falls at the end of the day was awesome. Please check with the authorities, based on other posts, I am no longer sure if this area is closed or not. |

confused as weakness wall looks to be squarely in the closure area? Has there been an updated map released? |

Trespassing and getting caught can hurt the climbing community relations. We don't need to look like the problem as people are suggesting is happening at Red Rock. |

drewp wrote: I certainly hope I didn't climb in a closed area. All I know is that the first area I went to had access blocked and clear signage so I went to a different area, parked in an established lot and hiked on an existing trail (with other hikers) and never saw any sign about that area being closed. Definitely check with the proper authorities and I will edit my previous post. |
