Alpine Tents for 6'2" +
|
Anyone have recommendations or reviews for 4 season Alpine tents that are semi-comfortable for 6'2"+? Primarily will be used in the Cascades, down to Shasta. Looking at Big Agnes Shield, Big Agnes Copper Spur Expedition 2/3 (I have the UL3, which I love, but needs more wind resistance), MH Outpost 2, BD Hilight 3. Any others I should be looking at? EDIT: Ordered the Outpost 2 from REI. Will give it a test run in the yard and on Rainier in the next week or so. If its not the one, It can go back and I can try the Shield or Copper Spur Expedition From some marketing copy via escape route, apparently the outpost 2 uses a PE floor, not PU. so less risk of the floor breaking down over time. Will update when I get my hands on it Edit 2: 730am - indoor test setup for the Outpost 2, dimensions are as stated. though when Im lying down (no air mattress yet, which will bring me closer to the sloped back end), I barely touch both ends (im 6'2",relaxed laying position with feet slightly pointed). winter bags will definitely touch. Im not a fan of sleeping diagonal, but it would give some more room. There are 11 guy out points, but only 2 guy lines included. you'll need some extra stakes. Also found, what look like, Internal guyline connection points if you need to really brace the tent Debating If I keep, or return and pony up for a Slingfin Crossbow 2 (which is 92" long x 50" wide), or take a slight weight and size penalty with the BA Copper Spur Expedition 3 (90"x 70"/62") |

I just bought a Northface Mountain 25 back in November and used it all winter and absolutely love it. I've been warm in it down to -5F and 40 kt winds. I'm 6'1" and it's very roomy. |

I’m 6’ 4” & have used a BD El Dorado (single wall) & it’s been roomy enough. Unfortunately it’s no longer in production but used ones pop up online if you can find one. One other tent I’ve been considering is the Nemo Kunai 3P. Still pretty light @ just over 5 lbs: https://www.backcountry.com/nemo-equipment-inc.-kunai-tent-3-person-4-season |

Koy wrote: I've considered the Kunai, but its pretty short at 84" long, the BA Copper Spur Expedition is about the same weight and is 88" in the 2P and 90" in the 3P Similarly, The BA shield is 86" and MH Outpost 2 is 88" |

6'4" here. Always wanted a single wall bivy tent - never got one because foot/head of the bag will be against tent fabric soaking up condensation. Following to see what y'all figure out. |

I'm 6' and my sleeping bag touches both ends of the BD First Light (3 lb 6 oz) and ended up with a MHW EV2 and it is much roomier (and also much heavier... at 4 lb 14 oz). At first I was concerned with the whole "vestibule" length but it turns out in my version at least, the "vestibule" is just a zipper in the floor, so the whole tent is enclosed. |

Copper spur expedition is pretty roomy, tons of room with the fly (2 vestibules) |

Hilleberg Staika is 230cm (90") long. Expensive but bomber. The BD Ahwanee is also 90" supposedly, though I never liked the sail-like front they present to side winds. BD Mission 3 is apparently 94" but it's a bigger tent and I've never actually seen one in the flesh. |

Rab Latok Mountain 2p is 225cm long (88 inches) and bomber. |

bump for setup thoughts |

SlingFin Crossbow2 is 92 inches. Very strong tent and spacious with fairly vertical side walls. https://www.slingfin.com/collections/all-tents/products/crossbow-2-four-season |

At 6'3", I found interior height matters as well. None of the better options are cheap. |

The samay 2.0 is 87 in x 43 in kind of weird dimensions. But very light at Minimum weight: 1340 g (2 lb 15 oz) |

I’m 6’2 and my Rab mountain tent has been working fine. It’s just a little longer than the other bivy style tents |

Aaron Lieberman wrote: It breathes pretty well, even in the rain / cold. I’ve used it below freezing. My head/feet can be a little close but all in all I expect that from any bivy tent, they just don’t make any for tall people and this was the best one. I can set it up again sometime and try to get pics for you. |

Jack Walter wrote: I've got one of these as well, the Rab Latok Mountain. The breathability is amazing, way better than the multiple Biblers, a Firstlight etc that I've used all in very cold dry conditions. My Latok also survived a mega hailstorm at 5000m in Ladakh as well, no problem. I haven't used a big -30 bag in it but in a -15C kinda bag it wasn't squashed against the end, but it's close. Best to be alone and sleep diagonal. Agree height is an issue. I'm 6'7" and find I need at least 105cm (42"?) internal height to be able to sit up properly, get dressed etc. Lots of good tents are only 95cm. |
