Hi all,

What ropes make a good lightweight tag line for rappelling? whats the minimum diameter, or the recommended diameter?

I see this on sale at REI....would it be the best choice...?

https://www.rei.com/product/167804/mammut-alpine-80mm-dry-rope

......or are there better choices?

I currently have 2 new 70m 9.5 dry climbing ropes, and 2 old 60m dry 9.8 ropes.

Thanks all!.....John

If all you're using it for is a tagline, I like the Edelrid Rap Line 2, they've updated it again recently, this is the the current model: https://edelrid.com/us-en/sport/ropes/rap-line-protect-pro-dry-6mm?variant=911238

I's about 25% lighter and much less bulky compared to the cord you linked.

Esprit APER or the equivalent Maxim rope, both thin and stiff.
Petzl Pur Line is nice too but MUCH more supple in case you prefer a stiff rap line to reduce snags.

Second for the Edelrid Rap Line. I use the hell out of mine and really really really like it. Reasonably light given it works in the alpine/glaciers/as a tag/haul line… only downside is that I find it tangles very often and very badly even when I’m babying it. But that might be a skill issue lol.

Dang that Edelrid rap line looks pretty bangin might have to get one. Super cool that it functions both as a hyper static and a dynamic at the same time. Tight shit

consider the Beal Escaper instead

I really dig a skinny half rope as a tagline!  It gives me the warm fuzzies knowing if the main rope gets hung up i have options to lead safely to unstick it.  Using beal gully 7.3 currently in this application, would recommend.

BD 6mm Tag line. Fairly stiff. Cheaper.

"Best" option, cost aside, is probably the Edelrid line.

There are other options, when tag line means purely a pull down rope and you are blocking every rappel. Some canyoneers go very skinny dyneema pull "strings"...

Yea I love the Edelrid’s versatility. I like owning it because it’s not just one thing, and I don’t use any of its functions often enough to warrant owning a specific thing for each one of them. Prolly worth thinking about your usage and tailoring your purchase to that. If you need a reliable thing just for tagging, the BD is prolly good. If you want super light and compact, then yea maybe like a bunch of 3mm Dyneema. Maybe you want ultra cheap? Paracord, I guess is technically an option. Or if you do some alpine crap and like funky ropes like me, then the Edelrid. Hard to make recs without knowing the use case.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
