Vibes around Plymouth NH?
|
Thinking about buying a home near Plymouth. I'm familiar with the area from day trips since I was little, but have never lived there. I'm a 28yr old dude. Will there be friends to make? Will there be people who want to climb after work? Will people want to climb on my moonboard in my garage when it's raining? Honestly just worried about it being isolating. Family and friends will be 2hr or more away so I'm worried it could be a bummer to be there long term. I grew up in RI for context - the weather etc isn't my concern, I'm more worried about meeting people |

Don't know Plymouth at all, but is there an option to be a little closer to North Conway? The community and climbing scene there is fantastic, and very welcoming. |

It’s a college town. So lotsa young people. It’s got a great downtown albeit small and some great places to eat. It even has a live music venue that gets some “national touring acts.” You’re 15 minutes from Rumney and you’ll find people climbing from dawn to dusk. You’re half an hour to great alpine climbing at Cannon and even less time to Russel Crags sport climbing. So there’s plenty of close climbing without going to NoCo. I live in southern NH as reference. |

Is renting an option for you to see how you feel about the experience before committing to buying? |

Thanks to all responses, I appreciate it. Renting is an option and considering it. Also considering the conway area but part of it comes down to whereever I can find a home I can afford which has proved more challenging near conway. |

Conway area is annoyoing and a worse location, from the standpoint of access back/forth to southern New England. Plymouth area is super beautiful with all the lakes and then being right on the cusp of the white mountains. Scene-wise the Rumney scene is super welcoming and there's always people to meet with/while cragging especially if you live close by and become a regular. The people who climb at Rumney are way committed to climbing hard and the sport climbing mentality is one of inclusiveness and togetherness, as opposed to trad climbing which can lend itself to wanting to be alone with your partner and "get out into the wild". Plymouth itself is pretty quiet and honestly there's not much chance you'll meet anyone. Again it comes back to Rumney being a hub of northeast climbing (second only to the Gunks), and therefore you'll be basing your social gains on Rumney itself and the corresponding hanging-out that might occur from meeting people there (such as going out after, hanging at campfires, inviting people over, etc). The property won't be cheap, but if you are in love with good sport climbing and possibly ice as well, you'd be pleased to live there. It also would work out as a smart investment since the Lakes region is super super popular for non-climbers. |

I lived Plymouth for a few years, and I think it's a great community. I'm 30 min south of there now, and I like being a little closer to Concord so I can easily get to the gym or Rumney on weeknights, depending on weather. Daytripping Franconia, Conway, and southwestern Maine, and Vermont is very doable from there. |

Your in a great location for climbing! You will make friends. All the rock and ice climbing you want minutes away! I live down in Canaan about 30 minutes away. |

As a 25 y/o who moved up here basically on a whim from North Carolina knowing only someone who had also just moved up here. You're in the right area. Rumney is just down the road and Kinsman and Franconia notches aren't far either. You can easily day trip to pretty much anywhere worth climbing in NH, VT, MA, and ME. Don't be a jerk and you'll find new friends at Rumney pretty quickly. I try and go climbing after work as often as I can and Rumney is a usual spot that myself and others frequent especially as the days get longer. Honestly if you have a moon board in your garage that's going to be a big draw for people on the rainy days! |

I notice nobody is mentioning the blue radioactive stones dropping out of the roadcuts you walk by at Rumney, lol. Must be trying to unload their real estate before the price drops.. Also, locals are known to snicker when out of earshot. |

Having lived in that area for a few years, it can be isolating. I recommend Concord or Lebanon area. Lebanon is getting a brand new climbing gym this year. |
