Bicycle touring the length of New Zealand and also climbing

We are toying with the idea of bicycling the entirety of New Zealand and climbing along the way. It's a mighty task to parse all the climbing areas and relation to cycle route and I am just wondering if anyone has done this before. I would probably use a bike trailer for the climbing gear. I doubt we would bring a trad rack, it seems there is plenty of sport routes to keep us busy. We have never been to New Zealand. We'd probably stay for 6-8 weeks in the NZ summer. We would prefer to camp the majority of the time and get a room like once a week or so.

Are the popular climbing sport areas a pain to get to by bike? Is camping right at or near crags common? Would theft of all our gear while climbing be a real concern? I saw we could rent gear at hangdog, would it make more sense to just do a bike tour and climb there for a couple weeks, maybe rent gear at one or two other spots if possible?

I know a lot of this would be personal opinion I'm just hoping someone might have some insight. I don't know anyone personally who has cycled across New Zealand and I can't find anyone online who has done it while climbing.

Camping near crags is relatively common.

Do you know approximately what route you'd be doing?

Wharepapa South would be an obvious stop.  It's the biggest collection of sport climbing on the North Island.  It would be relatively easy to keep an eye on your stuff while climbing.  Bryce's is close and rents everything you'd need.  He also has all the beta and a few rooms to rent. You could also camp at the school around the corner.

I have seen people bicycle to Kawakawa Bay relatively often.  The approach is along a mountain bike trail and is long enough to warrant camping for a couple days. I would not do it on a road bike, but you could rent a different bike in Kinloch if needed.

The Port Hills around Christchurch have a bunch of crags where cycling would be a day trip from town. Not much camping at the crags though.

I would guess that your route passes near Wanaka. I'm sure you'd have plenty of options there too. And maybe Queenstown.

I was fortunate enough to live in NZ for 2ish years and do a lot of climbing. Exclusively on the south island, however.

I would say most crags have either a short approach from a camp spot , or you will have access to their extensive(and cheap) hut network where you can stay pretty comfortably. I don't have experience biking between all of it but I reckon it would be manageable.

I've heard horror stories of people's vans getting broken into but I don't think it is a fair representation of what you may experience.

Lastly, if you do end up going , I would bring all your gear(including trad gear if you plan making it to Milford sound !)and just sell it at the end of your trip. You could easily get what you paid for especially if you have a pro deal or get it on sale or something. Gear is stupid expensive in NZ. Id be VERY hesitant to rely on renting gear.

If you have any more specific questions I am happy to help out

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
