Talus head/neck separation with a shattered bit for good measure

New member and American mom here. Looking for encouragement/advice.

My expat daughter lives in Queensland with my almost SIL. They are currently on holiday in New Zealand and he took a decent spill after going beyond where my daughter was comfortable on a trail, resulting in a broken ankle.  He had to be airlifted to a hospital that was a 3.5 hour drive from the location of the accident. Thankfully, there was a top notch ortho surgeon at the hospital he was taken to and another hiker was kind enough to accompany my daughter on the long drive to the hospital.

My daughter reported that his talus had the most damage. It had separated from the head and neck and something was shattered within. The injury is a level 3 of 4, so pretty serious. The shattered pieces were fused, and review of a post op CT scan with the surgeon is pending. He HAS, fortunately, been cleared to use crutches.

I found this forum after googling Talus Level III injuries for a greater understanding of the injury itself. They are both very active, and he is an Industrial Electrican, so on his feet every day.  Or was, this development has clipped his wings, both for work and play.

I am hoping to learn of similar experiences, recoveries, and how I can best support them during the healing journey.

Your input is appreciated. Please and thank you.
