Hey, trying to figure out spring break plans.  Is there a higher incidence of van breaks while climbing in red rocks? I imagine in the canyon it would be low, but the bouldering area?

In addition, what’s the free overnight parking situation . I was there a couple years ago and it wasn’t a problem.  I don’t mind driving 30 mins, just need a free overnight parking sit.

Not sure about break ins, I'm local and have a truck that's obviously lived in and never have any issues. You can park free overnight at Skid Row, you'll have a lot of neighbors though. It's on the left as you first come from summerlin onto Blue Diamond rd before you hit red rock. Theres also Macks Canyon and Lovell Canyon for free dispersed camping which will be a lot more spacious and enjoyable as well as beautiful. Hope you have a good trip!

This is semi-dated info.  Skid Row has been closed.  Macks is currently closed for the season (and under snow).  Your best option is Lovell.

What are we calling skid row? The line of vans on the shoulder leading to the loop is still alive and well and given the abysmal camping options, I’d say vanning is the Red Rock way.

Go by a shelter and adopt a pit bull. You'll never be broken into or at risk while camping but of course need to stick to places with moderate temps.

"Skid Row" referred to the unpaved rectangular lot by the detention basin (red box).  This lot is now blocked by cement barricades as the result of unruly behavior and an accident caused by a driver pulling out from the lot.

There are No Parking signs all along Rte. 159, Red Rock Canyon Road, in this section (yellow dotted line), and van parking increased there after the lot closure.  The No Parking signs are not being enforced, but use at your own risk, since ticketing or towing could easily happen -- and is likely if people behave there the same way they behaved at the original Skid Row.

Too bad the previous BLM assistant manager was more focused on building bike paths from the Summerlin mansions to Calico, and gating/closing Calico, instead of fixing the camping situation.

I’m looking for partners to climb with 4/7-20th. I have a campsite in the park that I would be open to sharing with you for a night or two. HMU if you’d like to join forces on some easy moderate climbs together. DM me, thanks!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
