Cutting thin rap lines like edelrid rap line

Hello,

Looking to chop down my edelrid rap line to 2x 35m sections for skimo.

Will the sheath, being a high percentage of Kevlar, be an issue when melting the ends?

I plan on finishing each end with heat shrink tuning.

My DIY hot knife solution recently:

1)  Start by wrapping the section you want to cut tightly with climbing tape. 3-4 times around should be good, single tape width.

2) Cut through the middle of the tape with good scissors or with a knife. Keeping tension on the line while cutting makes it easier and cleaner

3) Use a Jetboil flame to burn the exposed core, focusing on the cut end not the tape. You could use a candle campfire, torch or whatever is handy

I segmented two Edelrid Rapline II's recently, this method worked great for me. The tape seems to hold the sheath together and prevents it from unweaving immediately. The sheath also tends to get crispy and irregular when exposed directly to a flame. The tape protects it and directs the heat while you roast the innards.

Tape and cut rope in half, take tape off and pull core strands out two to three inches and cut off, and milk slack out of cover.  Insert a bent wire through cover where core ends, unravel about 3/4- 1” and insert in wire.  Pull out and cut off extra and pull on end to draw cut end inside.  Add some stitches to keep it together.

Hey all,

Here’s the method I used.

Cut rope, melt core.

Place epoxy around whole end.
slide adhesive shrink tubing around it.

Heat shrink tubing, but leave an 1/8 overlap on the end.
That extra bit will heat and come in tight around the rope end and VOILA donezo.

Thanks for the advice!

Nice, epoxy and heat shrink, that is a thorough job.

I do a DIY hot knife sometimes, get any old knife, heat it up nice and hot on a gas stove. Goes through nylon like butter, cuts and melts at the same time.

I've not tried on the rapline, but other edelrid kevlar weave ropes are noticeably more difficult to fuse.

I second sacrificing an old butter knife to making a DIY hot knife.

And if you don't have a gas stove a propane torch, gas grill or camp stove will do the same. And if you don't want to wreck grandma's silver butter knife a box cutter blade heated up in a pair of vice grips will do the trick!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
