Looking at adding a ProTraxion for my haul setup but noticed two completely different versions online. Possibly a different year and some upgrades. But at almost a $100 difference

which one is the preferred?

So thinking the picture I posted is mislabeled and it’s a Mini Traxion? It certainly looks that way

The one with swivel will likely be more efficient. (Totally not knowing your use case), I suggest you skip all this and go with the “richards/hudon 2:1 hauling kit” unless you are married to 1:1 hauling.  It will be more expensive than this single piece of kit but it contains a microtrax which can be used to haul 1:1 and in many other ways….  And the 2:1 is a joy to use…. Happy hauling hermano

Thanks Nathon. My application will be most likely LRS hauling 1 bag for max 1.5 days on the wall.

just looking at what I need to procure now to practice hauling this spring

I have looked through the link you added in-depth and without hauling practice, it’s really quite confusing for someone new to it. Hence why I want to practice laps and laps of hauling at a local crag before heading out to Yosemite and bombing this lol

The ProTraxions are huge. They’re great, but heavy and not necessary.

If you want a 1:1 traxion, try the MiniTraxion (the video linked). If you want to do it The Modern Way, then read the linked discussion of the Hudon kit. It might seem like a 1:1 haul is simpler and therefore easier, but that correlation is not necessarily true.

Will,

For 1.5 days, i’d probably use a microtrax.  (And maybe attach your bag with one too so you can far end haul when/if the bag gets stuck, if the route is low angle and featured) I would go as light as possible with packing and haul 1:1. If you decide you wanna haul larger loads, the microtrax is an essential component of the Hudon 2:1, so it will not be wasted $.  Furthermore the micro can be used for soooo many other things.

I didn't watch the video, but the pics you posted are the new and old versions of the pro trax (new version has swivel). So if you want the old one, buy them now, won't be made anymore.

The (new) mini trax sorta replaces the features of the old pro trax. The functional difference between the mini trax and micro trax is you can install the rope without detaching the mini from the carabiner.

Can never own enough micro traxions, even if you already have a couple...whereas the other two are kinda one trick ponies, bulky and heavy.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
