Crash Pad Couches?

I’m looking at making a crash pad couch, probably using the Black Diamond Impact or Circuit pad. Has anyone made a frame or bought one? Any tips or ideas? Thanks

We have a Rockstar Volumes frame with the BD Impact pad.  A few thoughts:

  • We are happy with the RV build quality, it's definitely nicely made.
  • If the crash pad is going to be specifically for couch duty, consider flipping around the layers of the pad.  The pad has a firm foam on the green side, and a  soft foam on the black side.  By switching the layering order, you get a bit of a comfier seat.
  • If the pad is only for the couch, cutting off the shoulder straps makes for a lot more comfortable seat.
  • Consider putting some velcro on the pad/frame.  The pad does like to slip around.

I made one in college to fit my Organic Full Pad and used it as a couch for a couple months before moving. Took an afternoon to mock up in Fusion360 and then was able to cut it out of a single sheet of plywood using the school's CNC router.

If anyone's interested I can dig up the design files...

That looks sick! I’d be interested to see them if it’s not too hard to dig up

Escape climbing has a nice simple lightweight one for $119.

Surprisingly comfortable.

That may be my most likely choice at the moment. I also feel a little indebted to them at the moment since accidentally sent me a bunch of climbing holds at my work and I was able to use them on the rock wall at the camp I work at

Found the original design file, which should be viewable using viewer.autodesk.com, but I'm too lazy to put together a dimensioned drawing at the moment. If anyone makes one of these, I'd recommend adding cutouts to the back and seat, just to make them lighter and easier to transport. I meant to go back and add them in but never got around to it once I had a functional couch.

With the price of plywood right now, it might even be cheaper to just buy the Escape Climbing option instead of messing with my design. During school I got wholesale prices on birch plywood, so I think the whole thing cost me $40. I sold it a year later for $80 and was happy to double my money!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
