I left my Ropeman 1 on a carabiner... and learned a valuable lesson and became aware of a design flaw(?) (more of an improper use by leaving it on this carabiner) with the Ropeman 1 and maybe other toothless, camming devices.
If its unclear what is being shown here, the ridges of the cam have wedged themselves firmly into the grooves on this oval Petzl carabiner. Because of the bend at the bottom of this carabiner, it is prevented from having any side-to-side play. The ridges are blocked by the carabiner and there is no play whatsoever. How this thing has welded itself so firmly in this position, I may never know. (And yes, I had cut the wire off of it long before this occurred.)
Just be warned-- I see similar looking ridges on the Ropeman 4. I might smack it with a hammer if it comes to it.
Anyone else had this happen? Possible solutions? Thanks.
