Gaeta and Sperlonga without a car

Hello,

I'm planning to add 2-3 days of climbing on my trip to Italy in Gaeta in Sperlonga. I'd like to avoid renting a car and wondering how possible this is from someone who has some experience with the area. My idea is to take the train from Rome to Formia and then get a cab or bus to Gaeta. It seems like there are plenty of apartment rentals in Gaeta that are walking distance to Montagna Spaccata so first day of climbing could be done walking distance from the rental. On the other day or two I'd like to check out Grotta dell'Arenauta and potentially 1 other crag. Is it easy to get cabs between Grotta dell'Arenauta and from Gaeta  (and/or other crags). Or are there buss spots that get you walking distance to the crags? I'd also be open to biking but I could not find a bike rental company and was not sure if the roads are safe for biking.

Thanks for any info and open to any other info/reccomendations in that area

Just returned from the trip and thought I’d post a little beta in case anyone else wants to know in the future. We had a great time and wound up climbing in the arenauta cave both days. We did manage to avoid renting a car. Took the train from Rome to Formia Gaeta, and then you can take a bus or cab from the station to down town gaeta. Cab is 30 euros and bus is much cheaper. There is no official taxi service in gaeta but any hotel or Airbnb can give you a WhatsApp number for someone to drive you to the crag. The drive is only about 7 minutes but unfortunately there is a flat fee of 20 euro each way for a cab so it winds up being probably around the same cost as just renting a car. There is no cell service in the cave but just outside of it there to coordinate pick up with a cab but we also were able to just set a pick up time with the same person who brought us there without any issues.  We considered renting bikes which is possible in town but glad we didn’t. It is definitely doable but did not feel like the safest road to bike on and would have been a bit difficult on the cheap cruiser bikes they were renting for 20 euro a day.

TLDR super fun climbing probably renting a car is easiest and not more expensive than what I did but it was also fun figuring things out carless as well

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
