I’m looking for a 100% ice pick for my x-dreams.I’ve always used the stock mixed pick.

Options now are:

Kuznia (cheaper and good durability)

krukonogi (PX0 or PX1?) (expensive and very good durability)

Sport-Steinle (very expensive , increíble durability)

Cassin stock ice pick

Any comment regarding full ice performance?

Ps: I found one blog telling that for ice,the stock pick climbs better than kuznias. Also that mix and ice stock pick climbs really similar.

The stock Mixte and Ice picks are, to my eye, identical at the pick end. The Mixte has an extended collar down the shaft of the axe. There is a very slight difference in angle and height at the leading end, but the same angle of pick to ice surface

Hope this helps!

I have the Kruk PX00's and they are almost cheating. Like swinging a hot knife into butter. I think they are so thin though they almost cross the line to not durable. I don't take them out if there is a rock in sight, I think any swing into something hard would be an explosion. I think the PX 0 or 1's would be less nerve-racking for those spicy top outs.

I feel that the stock Mixed pick climbs ice better than the stock ice pick.

Below are some measurements in mm at the point chamfer, first tooth, 6th tooth:

New camp ice

3.0, 3.65, 3.9

3.0, 3.6, 4.0

Camp Mixte:

3.2, 3.3, 3.8

3.25, 3.3, 3.8

Px2a

4.3 straight

Pxktc

4.4 straight

Octa

3.9 straight

Px0a

3.45, 3.55, 3.65 (3.9 at head)

I slightly prefer the ice with head weights to the mixte. Both are noticably better than the px0, which is pretty average. PX0 is a bit more durable, comparable to petzl or grivel picks I've used.

For pure ice you really want the Kruk PXS00. Even better than the stock Cassin ice pick. It penetrates hard ice effortlessly and keeps its edge longer.

Durability wise it's not going to explode if you hit rock but it can't take any amount of torque without bending.

I was really stoked on the PX00's the first few times I climbed on them. However, they crumpled so badly the first time (and every time after) they touched rock, that they quickly became not so great because I was never able to file them back to newish condition.

Is it possible to buy Kruk picks anywhere currently?

Thanks guys! Anyone comparing Kuznia ice CD Vs cassin ice stock ones?

So, based on your feedback I will rank the picks performance (for ice) like that: (can change depending on the personal swing style)

1. Kruko PX00 (keep it far from the rock!)
2. Cassin stock ice (with weights)
3. Cassin stock mix / ice (without weights)
4. Kruko PX0

Anyone to share its experience with Kuznia, Sport-Steinle or kruko PXS (similar to PX0)?

I've been happy with the Kuznia and Howey Tools picks so far. I mostly climb in the northeast so it's pretty hard to never have any rock involved - topouts especially early season are usually turf. Both Kuznia and Howey seem more durable than the stock picks, which was my primary reason for getting different picks. I don't think I've seen any performance decrease.

Second vote for the howey mixed pick^ Didn't mention it bc OP asked about pure ice and while it is not bad by any means I wouldn't say its pure ice performance is anything to write home about. But, I find it climbs both ice and rock quite well, and is VERY durable. I put Howeys on for early season in MT where rock top outs are standard and have been shocked many a time that they do not need to be refiled. Great abuse taker that still performs 8/10 well.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
