Fell On A Hand Jam, Hand Still Tender

Hi all,

About 2 months ago, I fell on a thumbs up hand jam. Not a huge fall, but definitely slipped and fully weighted it unexpectedly. Now, the pinky edge of my hand still has pain in one specific spot. It is painful if I push on that spot, or if I have my wrist pulled back (imagine a push up position), but doesn't hurt while climbing, even on jams.

The pain isn't in my wrist, it almost feels like it is at the bottom of the bone in my hand. See picture below for approximate area. Anyone had this or something similar and found a fix?

Me (and a friend!) did the same thing and it was a months long battle with a TFCC tear. It may feel like you can climb just like before but the inflammation can be insanely delayed and debilitating. It’s a complicated area that doesn’t get a lot of blood flow to heal so be cautious, buy a wrist widget, and please see a sports PT.

Take time with a wounded hand

because it likes to heal. (they take a long time)

Thanks for the TFCC tear info. I did a quick Google and I feel like mine is a bit more on the hand vs the wrist. One page I was on showed a small bone in the hand about where my pain is, but didn't have a label. Need to do more digging.

The pain and location you describe reminds me of when I broke my pisiform bone. It wasn't from falling on a hand jam but you could get an X-ray to rule out a break. Mine was a micro fracture, didn't feel pain normally except when dong certain motions. If you make a karate chop with the hand, thumb up, and press down on the fingers while trying to resist do you feel pain?

Other thing to consider os some type of bone bruising. Good luck with your recovery.

Appreciate that Ashort! Not much pain when the resistance is on the fingers, but a bit when I move it down to where the meat of my hand starts. It has been improving a bit so woohoo!

What does your doctor say?
