I grew up climbing in gyms with thicker ropes for leading that could handle many falls and hang-dog wear and tear. Nostalgia led me to purchase this rope thinking it was the baddest and thickest rope on the market. The psych was high, however….

The trend at my current gym is gri-gris (ATCs are banned) with thinner 9.4-9.7MM ropes; everybody has one, and NOBODY likes my rope! Some climbers don’t trust it at all. Some refuse to use it.

Is this rope safe? I’m a heavier dude (195lbs), is it ok to use with lighter climbers or big climbers like me with lighter belayers and vice versa?

It’s within the range of an ohm. Anyone have experience with this rope (or similar thickness rope) and an ohm? What about the gri gri? I noticed it’s in the two star (not three star) range of the gri gri. Why is that?

So far I LOVE the rope. I like the feeling of a thick rope in the gri gri. I don’t think it’s heavy at all on short gym climbs.

Gonzalo, your rope is UIAA and CE certified, so it's definitely safe. Also, Bluewater doesn't make ropes that "aren't safe". Anyone who doesn't trust it doesn't know what they don't know. Have fun and ignore the haters on your rope!

There is nothing wrong with your rope. Like Terry said, it is UIAA and CE certified which means that it is just as safe as the ropes other climbers in your gym use. It might not feed as well as thin ropes through a grigri or an Ohm but your rope is perfectly fine. I still buy 10mm+ ropes for the gym I run since they still seem to take abuse a bit better than thinner ropes.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
