Microfracture and Brostrom surgery of ankle

Hey, all. Long time climber, here. I've had chronic ankle issues for about 30 years. Probably have sprained my right ankle 25 times. Did a doozy on it last fall and the pain never went away. Had an MRI and an osteochondral defect of the talar dome was found and all lateral ligaments ruptured. I've been able to get around and climb with some limitations, but I finally scheduled my surgery which will be microfracture and modified Brostrom.

If any of you fine folks have experience with recovery and getting back to climbing after these specific procedures, I'd love to hear from you. I am not excited for the recovery. Climbing is a huge part of my life and I hope to hear that fellow talar defect folks are doing well after microfracture and that people's instability is better after Brostrom.

Those pesky ankles! Thanks, all.

I had both of those procedures done on my "good" ankle to keep it from becoming as bad as my "bad" ankle.  It was almost 20 years ago, so I don't remember the recovery details other than it wasn't as bad as other surgeries on my bad ankle.  I'm still walking 20,000 steps a day and climbing 2 or 3 times a week, so I guess the surgery worked since I haven't had to slow down.  Ankle problems suck.  I do have poor range of motion in both ankles, but I'm thinking the microfracture and modified Brostrum surgery was a success.  Good luck on your recovery.
