Devils thumb, alaska BS !

The interview of me about Devils Thumb by Shelby Herbert was good. But the lead-in (opening of the interview) by Scott Simon,”host” is TOTAL BS !! The interview was aired on NPR Morning Edition on 9-9-23.  Mr. Simon falsely states that I have “…spent much of life trying to climb a near impossible summit “.  He hasn’t a Clue !  I climbed Devils Thumb twice in the’80s, and the mountain is certainly Not “near impossible “.
Many people are confused by the much attempted yet unclimbed and dangerous NorthWest face of the Thumb, compared with rest of the mountain, which in this age could be considered as Easy to summit . I didn’t succeed on my attempt to climb the notorious NW Face.

An earlier article about the Devils Thumb printed by Mountain Project is even more incorrect BS.  The writer gives so much false information, Its ridiculous that it wasn’t edited by someone who knows what they’re talking about. It sounds like the author isn’t even a climber. That article is a garbage can full of crap and SHOULD BE DELETED.!

It’s so sad that anyone can write or air any kind of BS they choose on the internet or radio .
And people believe it !!

Appreciate the perspective and sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately, I’m not surprised as the climbing community mostly consists of privileged white people who are shallow and quick to assume resulting in fake, bs articles

I love climbing but I actively chose not to make friends with climbers. I think I would have had a different sentiment if I climbed in earlier decades

I don't follow your logic. It sounds, from Dieter's post, like the "privileged white people" are at NPR, and are not climbers.

Resurrecting a single post, year-plus old thread with strong support…hmm.

Somebody’s got an agenda…

Predujices suck. Why advertise such negative small-mindedness, Heavy Breath? The point of life is to be joy full and at peace.

I make it a point to hang out with adventurers and to radiate joy and positivity. Makes life pretty good

Here's to smiles, risk, and unknown outcomes!

The climbing community puts itself on a pedestal of unwavering positivity and good people of high morals but my experiences have led me to see quite the opposite. Though it is great to be positive and full of joy……those same feelings, at times, prevent a given community from holding itself accountable for areas of improvement much like how a cult operates. There is never a right time to give an alternative or “super negative” viewpoint in a cult

Hello Dieter. I hope life is treating you well.

Climbing has become a mainstream sport where money has replaced passion, competence and achievement. Magazines, gear manufacturers and other sources of media (Mountain Project is owned by REI), long ago realized that there is much more profit in catering to beginners. In this profit driven environment, everyone has an equal voice - regardless of competence or experience. It is highly probable that the people responsible for the inaccuracies that you bring to light have little (or no) alpine experience. This is the world we live in: most modern "climbers" can't differentiate between a guided climb up Everest and a cutting edge ascent.

You made a comment to someone being upset some journalists didn't do their due diligence....and pulled race/privilege into it.
.....I mean, kinda sounds like you didn't do any due diligence yourself to find out off it indeed your assumptions are rooted any form of truth around the why those journalists published what they did.... Which is oddly similar to the distaste outlined by OP in the first place.

Cool cool.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
