New Hampshire Ice Late December
|
I will be in the Boston area visiting family with a couple days to climb this year. I saw how last year looked and realize that conditions might be crap but... Looking for advice on how drive times might change with weather: I Google mapped some stuff and curious if I should add time for (non-blizzard) winter driving conditions. Where can I find current conditions besides MP? I have a couple friends from NH but I don't think either will be around. Anyone have recs for picking up dialed partners? Last time I was back there I went out with some people who were not dialled and didn't know how to setup a belay in guide mode for multi-pitch. |

Drive times can drastically change with weather conditions that time of year. I live in Manchester and am usually 90 minutes to get to most of the popular ice climbing areas. A couple days last year were 2.5 + hours to Crawford Notch. Probably don’t sound like big distances coming from out west. Just post to the northeast partners site here, there will be plenty of people looking to get out. And who knows, we may have a killer early ice season this year. |

I’ve climbed my first ice in October. And January. You just never know. Last year I had 10 days in November amd December total. January 1 it rained for three days amd set us back to basically starting over. Be prepared for long approaches if “notch ice” isn’t in. Or long drives to places way north or in Maine for ice. How long it takes if there’s bad weather depends on what you’re driving and the day. Weekends being busier. |
