Hyper extended thumb breaking two falls. Bruised muscle in palm of hand

Hyper extended thumb - on non-dominant left hand - and bruised the muscle twice in one week. This wasn't even climbing. Both were times where I broke my fall at home having my thumb hit the top of a chair, the 2nd time was breaking my fall on a SUP board.

The pain and bruising is only in the palm of the hand where it's discolored. I can move my thumb around and still type. Back of thumb is fine.

Pinching with the thumb and another finger was very painful yesterday. Today is much better.

Should I brace it a certain way or buy a pre-made brace when I do activities that might hyper extend it again?

I was hoping to climb in the gym with the 4 fingers in the next week, but with this type of injury is it a few weeks to heal and not recommended to climb for maybe a couple of those first weeks?

I’d say let pain be your guide. I bruised my palm pretty bad right there once. It was tender for a while, but it worked itself out.

I’m not a doctor, but I do play one on MP.

i would get an over the counter thumb spica splint, rest, and ice. if its still in a lot of pain after few weeks, i'd see someone to get an x-ray to evaluate for a scaphoid fracture given the location

Yup, go see your doctor!
