Public Service Announcement: I was asked to help spread the word about the upcoming Longs Peak Symposium, held in Estes Park from Aug 18 through Aug 20. Join the community in celebrating the 150th anniversary of Isabella Bird's 1873 ascent of Longs Peak, among other items. Briefly...
1) Friday, Aug 18, 6:00–9::00 pm at Performance Park in Estes Park. Stop by to celebrate Jim Detterline's life of service to the Estes Park climbing scene, and enjoy two free concerts thereafter. I believe the Mayor of Estes Park will be on hand at 6:00 pm to dedicate the newly named climbing wall at Performance Park (Jim Detterline Memorial Climbing Wall), and then members of Jim's community jazz band will perform until 7:00 pm. A local band will perform from 7:00–9:00 pm. All events are free and open to the public.
2) Saturday, Aug 19, 10:00 am–4:30 pm, Longs Peak Historical Symposium at the American Legion Post in Estes Park (located within the triangle formed by Hwy 36, Hwy 7, and 1st St). Stop by for all or any of the presentations. Full schedule attached below. Seating is somewhat limited, so it may be wise to show up a little early for those who want to take in only one or two of the presentations. Admittance to the presentations is free. My understanding is that the restaurant at the American Legion will be serving food for those who want a meal at the lunch break, though you will need to pay for your meal. Bring some extra cash to help support the LP Symposium: Very attractive T-shirts commemorating the event will be available for sale ($20, I think), and the posters promoting the event are also available for sale ($10?). Picture of poster attached below.
3) Sunday, Aug 20, 4:00–6::30 pm, free barbecue at the Meeker Park Lodge along Highway 7 between Longs Peak and Allenspark. Enjoy a meal and camaraderie among fellow Longs Peak enthusiasts.
Schedule of Saturday's presentations
Promotional poster available for sale at Saturday's event. Replace the "7 - 9 PM" time window for Friday's event at Performance Park with "6–9 PM" to reflect the updated schedule. The T-shirts (apologies for no photo) will also be available for sale at the Estes Park Mountain Shop on Hwy 34 until the inventory runs out. Visit www.longspeakreunion.com for additional information.
