Don't bail.  Just show up midweek to the Lone Pine or Bishop visitor's centers.  Availability can be surprisingly good.

Unless I misunderstand something, the availability at the visitor center would be the same as on rec.gov right? (referring to the permits that are released 2 weeks ahead of time and immediately sell out -- not the permits released 6 months ahead of time)

Anyway I am actually rescheduling to 2 weeks later instead of completely bailing. hopefully iether the rec.gov or visitor center approach will work then...

There have been some changes over the years but yes, I believe you’re right Ellen.

Couple weeks ago I went to the Bishop ranger station to get a permit for the Hulk. There were spots open but the ranger was unable to issue the permit since the trailhead is in the Hoover district. We had a good chuckle about that being D - U - M - M dumm ! Then I logged onto rec .gov at the office and went on my way.

It’s a shame you can’t walk in to a station and grab a permit anymore! Thanks Obama

P.S. hope you have a good trip permit trouble aside :)

You could try walking into the appropriate station. Bishop is the headquarters for the Inyo National Forest. The Hoover Wilderness is part of the Humboldt Toiyabe. In Bridgeport.

Good point Paul.. It appears I am the one who is dumm ... !

Grabbing actual walk in permits was my go-to back in the day. Lots of no shows meant there was always something tasty available. Now it looks like they are randomly released on rec .gov within a 24 hr window after the party cancels online (if they bother to do so).

I still enjoy walking into the station, and looking at the maps and talking to the rangers about the mountains. One more genuine human interaction lost to the unrelenting onslaught of BIG COMPUTER.

No shows are also released online, last I checked. A "no-show" with an online permit means that the person never went through the process to actually download and print it out. They would release that on the day of entry, I believe.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
